A weight off the Kiwis shoulders

Thursday, 05 April 2012 11:56

This week we sat down with project director Benjamin Jones, who is following the BiteRite healthy-eating meal-delivery programme

Benjamin has been following the BiteRite plan for four weeks now and has lost an impressive nine kilos. Why did you decide to join BiteRite? I realised that my eating habits were wrong. I skipped breakfast and just had coffee, and then I ate extra lunch and had snacks to compensate. Also my portion sizes were too big. I wanted to change my eating patterns but I didnt want to spend a lot of time planning my meals and food shopping. I did some research on different meal-delivery companies before deciding that this one was the best. I was extremely sceptical I didnt think that it would work but I decided to give it a go because I needed to lose weight. So far I have lost nine kilos.

Did you have a pre-diet consultation? Yes, I met the BiteRite nutritionist. She weighed me and calculated my BMI. We discussed my goals and she explained the importance of portion control. I was given the tools to lose weight but it was up to me to stick to it.

BEFORE

AFTER

Describe your first week. The brown BiteRite food bags containing all my meals for the day were delivered to my home in the morning before I left for work for the day. I didnt find it hard although I did mentally struggle for the first few days because I wasnt used to strict portion control and I was accustomed to snacking in the evenings. After a few days I got used to the change. My biggest surprise was that the food was delicious. My perception was that diet food tastes like hospital food, but actually the meals were very tasty while also being nutritious. I really enjoyed waking up and knowing that my healthy meals were ready. I didnt have to cook or shop, it was a weight off my shoulders. After only two or three weeks people commented that I had lost weight and my suit trousers were too big.

What do you like most and least about the programme? The thing that I liked least was getting used to smaller portions having been a large-portion eater. What I like most is the efficiency of having all my meals prepared for me, its so easy. Im also happy that I lost nine kilos. The day I weighed myself was the happiest day that I have had in a long time. I expected to have lost a few kilos but not nine! Im now back into jeans that I wore five years ago. IM A VEGETARIAN
A vegetarian eating pattern can be a healthy option. The key is to consume a variety of foods and the right amount of foods to meet your calorie and nutrient needs. No single food can provide all the nutrients your body needs. The more restrictive a diet is, the more challenging it is to get all the nutrients you need. Vegetarian diet pyramid A healthy diet takes planning, and a food pyramid can be a helpful tool. The vegetarian pyramid outlines food groups and food choices that, if eaten in the right quantities, form the foundation of a healthy vegetarian diet.
