Mayor to File $297.7 Million Capital Spending Plan on Friday Largest Investments to be in Schools, Public Works, Transit and Parks
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Mayor Karl Dean will continue to invest in his priorities of schools, public safety and economic development with a $297.7 million capital spending plan. He will file the capital spending plan, his third since taking office, in the form of a bond resolution with the Metro Council on Friday, May 25. This capital spending plan is not about constructing new buildings but rather about meeting the essential needs of our residents to continue to have a good quality of life, Dean said. This plan takes care of the basics of the city, such as renovating and expanding our schools, repairing roads and building sidewalks, and improving our fire halls and police infrastructure. Earlier today, Dean visited northeast Nashville to view a residential area in need of a sidewalk and a stretch of road that is in critical need of repaving. Both projects will improve vehicular and pedestrian safety and are examples of the significant investment being proposed in sidewalks and paving. A complete list of the capital projects to be funded in the spending plan will accompany the legislation filed tomorrow. Highlights include the following: Metro Schools will receive a total of $97 million, the majority of which will go towards additions and renovations to existing school facilities that are outdated, in disrepair or overcrowded. Metro Public Works will receive a total of $62 million to address infrastructure needs throughout the city, including: o $30 million in paving and road projects o $12 million for new sidewalks and sidewalk repairs Metro Parks and Recreation will receive a total of $34 million, including: o $15 million for open space acquisition and riverfront redevelopment o $4 million for greenways o $2.5 million for improvements to Shelby Park based on the recently completed master plan o $2 million for improvements to Centennial Park based on the recently completed master plan
