END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME Joe Warburton

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them? In the early developmental stages of both YCN and P,R,D, brief analysis was essential and it proved insightful to explore all aspects of a brief in order to gain the most out of it. For the P,R,D brief, I incorporated a live project that ensured I researched in depth, looked at various possible outcomes and ultimately devise an outcome that the client was pleased with. In terms of the YCN project, me and Luke worked collaboratively on all aspects of the brief as our approach to design is much alike. Our design aesthetic complimented each others well and as we approached the project methodically, the project didnt seem rushed. It was useful to pitch design ideas to one another as we both understood what direction we intended to take and how we envisioned it to look.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process? Aforementioned, I learned to explore a brief in its entirety, looking at the root of a problem and working from there. For the product, range and distribution brief, I was working on a project for a local builder who specialised in bespoke builds and renovations. To reference this, I devised a full custom typeface that I initially did not set out to do yet ultimately formed the brand aesthetic. This typeface was used throughout all promotional materials and will be used in the future by the client. As the building profession is extremely tactile I thought it would be interesting to explore stock and materials within the deliverables to reference the materials and processes they use. I initially thought about experimenting with wood and concrete but later decided to use greyboard and screw binding using traditional machine screws and feedback from the client was positive. We are now going to print all of his publications using this method as opposed to with Blurb that we initially decided to use.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these? Now that we are about to enter the third year, I aimed to create a professional body of work that I could ultimately use within my portfolio. To convey this, I tried to ensure my products were photographed well which I believe has improved greatly since past projects. I was extremely pleased with the bespoke typeface I designed as this is not something I have explored in much depth. I managed to translate this into a functioning font so I was able to use this within all promotional material, both print and web. I believe my skillset lies within branding through a simple design aesthetic therefore I aim to capitalise this and explore moreso in the third year.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future? I ultimately need to research and explore my concept and brief in much more depth. With the Graze project, there was a multitude of research options I could look into but I looked primarily at contextual research. I also need to clarify what my concept is, what the problem I need to solve is and how I intend to solve it earlier in the project. Although workshops allowed us to analyse and dissect a brief in the early stages of the projects, I did not explore the brief as much as Id liked. 5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these? 1) Spend more time analysing and dissecting the brief to clarify what the problem is and what I need to do in order to solve it. 2) Draw more and explore a range of initial design ideas to create a more thorough body of work 3) Explore the concept in more depth and explore all possible design decisions 4) Experiment with stock and print processes and become more tactile and hands on with a project dont just settle with what I know 5) Do more extensive research into all aspects of a brief and dont simply follow one direction.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas: (please indicate using an x) 5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor 1 2 3 4 Attendance Punctuality x Motivation x Commitment x Quantity of work produced x Quality of work produced x Contribution to the group The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible. 5 x x
