As an extension of the yearbook brief and in order of chronological production we were asked to brand the exhibition entitled PRE*. Initially four posters were requested to identify the four separate days of the event. However due to the nature of the client proposed was a blackboard with white vinyl design, allowing the client to customise each day.

Imprecise with Precise Tools

A collaborative student-staff event with guest designers Prof. Steffi Hulein and Rob Laux (Magdeburg /Berlin). This 3-day workshop explored digital and analogue ways to generate images and manipulate materials. Participants learned to create code using Processing (open source generative design software) to drive machinery such as computer numerical control (CNC) routers and laser machines. Staff-student collaboration and practical experimentation were key. Highlights included the glee that filled the room when a computer began drawing with sand and an unexpected dance by a video camera strapped to a machine toolhead. Outcomes were displayed in a publication and exhibition in the BA (Hons) Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) studios as part of Leeds Digital Festival. The opportunity to invite guests from Germany came about through our membership of Group for International Design Education (GIDE). The subtitle, precise with imprecise tools, was suggested by Steffi and Rob and was integral to the workshop ethos. It hints at a useful tension between digital and analogue, machine and human, computercontrolled plot versus the hand-made mark. There is a wider implication that chance, mistakes, mess and hands-on making are essential in the post-digital age. In the weeks before the workshop in a seminar on that years GIDE theme creativity for local enterprise we considered Thomas Heatherwicks Extrusions (2009). Heatherwicks seats are made from a single misshapen

piece of extruded aluminium and seem to rely on the possibility of accident, failure and a necessary level of trust between mechanised industry and the creative practitioner. Day three was very experimental and fast-paced. Student Adam Cluley attached his video camera to the CNC tool-head. The outcome was an unexpected three minute video capturing a kind of dance we see a tooleye-view of the machine, milling and spitting sawdust as it skates and pirouettes across the surface of a piece of shuttering plywood.

The physical design work throughout the brief was carried out by myself, with regular input from Arthur, as he decided at an early stage, this would be the most efficient way of

POST* is a forthcoming exhibition of work by finalyear students studying on the BA (Hons) Art & Design (Interdisciplinary) degree at Leeds College of Art. Over the duration of the course students 2

have all formed very individual practices and processes. POST* aims to show finished works, whilst also exposing some of the developmental content that precedes them. In conjunction with the final show an earlier workin-progress event - PRE* - was held at Enjoy, Leeds in late April 2012. PRE* was an exposition of live practice and discussions that served to inform and 3

producing the end product. The publication uses Aperu and Flareserif throughout, with rules set for body copy, footnotes and pull quotes creating a coherent piece of design.

With the yearbook not being back from print in time for submission the above mockups show a few examples of how the typographic rules are consistent throughout and more importantly how the POST* extra format functions. The B6 insert, contains all the Artists statements and contact details, is attached to the publication in post production by an elastic band.

Following a discussion with the course and at the point of our own submission, we are in the process of curating and producing artwork for a huge blackboard wall in the exhibition space. Showreel titles and credits will also be produced. POST* Exhibition Interior 32 8 Black board wall Twenty yearbooks will be displayed upon this White vinyl wall, with each cover being customised by a Typefaces usedAperu Bold student, all curated and overseen by us.
