VOLLEYBALL STUDY GUIDE

HISTORICAL FACTS Developed by William G. GENERAL INFO Object: 1. To keep the ball from striking the floor on your side of the net 2. To send the ball over the net so that the opposing team cannot return the ball Two teams of six players

SCORING An official game is 25 points. Team must win by two points. *Frost rule - either team may score a point during game play. An official match consists of the best of 5 games.

RULES A person may not hit the ball twice in a row Maximum of three hits per side The serve must clear the net If the ball hits the line, it is considered good Both feet must be out of bounds when serving The ball must be served from the right corner behind the end line Players may not touch the net or step over the center line Lifting (hitting the ball with an open palm) or throwing of the ball is a foul - there must be a distinct "hit" of the ball The server announces the score before each serve, their score is stated first then their opponents. The ball must be rolled under the net when switching possession.

TERMS

Bump The forearm pass made on low balls.

The ball should contact between the wrist and elbow. The forearms should create a flat platform for maximum control. Power should come from the legs (knees extending). Hands are folded on top of each other with the thumbs parallel. Pass made when the ball is high. Hands should make a window above the head Knees, elbows, wrists and fingers should extend when contact is made with the ball. The player should hear a popping sound.

Set - the overhand pass made by contacting the ball above the head with the finger pads

Serve - the method of putting the ball in play over the net (underhand or overhand) Spike - a ball hit with a strong downward force into the opponents' court Dig - a one handed emergency pass with a closed fist Side out - is when the serving team fails to win a point or plays the ball illegally (not used in Frost
games)

Point - is awarded when a team fails to return the ball legally to the opponents' court Rotation - the shifting of players clockwise when gaining the serve from the opponents Volley - a succession of legal hits between teams
