Characteristics of a good learner in the English class Caractersticas de un buen estudiante en la clase de ingls

When we talk about foreign languages or about how to teach a foreign language, we, as teachers, focus on methods, strategies and activities that can help our students succeed in their learning process. But we also need to bear in mind that success when learning a language does not only depend on the teachers abilities and/or knowledge, but also on the learners motivacin and interest in his own learning. Students must know and understand that they are responsible for their own learning and that they are not mere spectators in the classroom, but active participants. Cuando hablamos sobre otras lenguas o sobre como ensear una lengua extranjera, nosotros, los profesores, nos centramos en mtodos, estrategias y actividades que ayuden a nuestros alumnos a tener xito en su proceso de aprendizaje. Pero tambin tenemos que considerar, que el xito en el aprendizaje, no slo depende de las habilidades y conocimientos del profesor, sino tambin de la motivacin y el inters del alumno en su propio aprendizaje. Los alumnos deben saber y entender que son responsables de su propio aprendizaje, no meros espectadores en la clase, sino participantes activos. But what are the characteristics of a good learner? Pero, cuales son las caractersticas de un buen alumno? A good learner must be willing to listen to whats going on, not just by paying attention in class, but by really listening to the English that is being used, being analytical, using his intelligence, and also being eager to learn. Un buen alumno debe estar dispuesto a escuchar lo que est ocurriendo, no slo prestando atencin en clase, sino escuchando realmente el ingls que se est usando, siendo analtico, usando su inteligencia y sintiendo entusiasmo por aprender tambin. A good learner must be willing to experiment, to take risks, to try things out, and see how they work. The need to use the target language, English in this case, loudly or quietly, is very important for all the students (extrovert or not). Un buen alumno tiene que estar dispuesto a experimentar, a asumir riesgos, a probar cosas, y a ver como funcionan. La necesidad de usar la lengua que se quiere aprender, ingls en este caso, en voz alta, o en silencio, es muy importante para todos los alumnos ( ya sean extrovertidos o no). A good learner must be willing to ask questions. Students need to feel the urge to find out why. This is a very important part of a good learners equipment. They need to be able to judge when it is appropiate to ask questions and when it is not.

Un buen alumno tiene que estar dispuesto a hacer preguntas. Los alumnos necesitan sentir la necesidad de saber por qu. Esta es una parte muy importante del 10

equipamiento que debe tener un buen alumno. Los alumnos tambin debe ser capaces de diferenciar cuando es apropiado hacer preguntas y cuando no. Good learners are willing to think about how to learn, bringing their own study skills to the lessons, and using them when they are working on their own as well. An example would be a student who writes new vocabulary in his own wordbook, or uses certain strategies in order to write a text (e.g., by writing a draft first..). Los buenos alumnos estn dispuestos a pensar en formas de aprender, llevando sus propias estrategias a las clases, y usando las mismas tambin cuando estn trabajando por su cuenta. Un ejemplo sera un estudiante que escribe nuevo vocabulario en su libro de vocabulario o usa ciertas estrategias a la hora de escribir un texto (por ejemplo, escribiendo un borrador primero..). A good student is someone who is willing to accept correction and get feedback from the teacher (this feedback should involve praising as well, that is, acknowledgement for the things they can do well) , acting upon what they are told. Of course, the teachers need to offer constructive criticism, never a punishment for being wrong. Un buen alumno est dispuesto a aceptar correcciones y a recibir retroalimentacin del profesor (esta retroalimentacin tambin debera incluir elogios, es decir, reconocimiento por las cosas que saben hacer bien), actuando sobre lo que se les dice. Por supuesto, los profesores necesitan ofrecer una crtica constructiva, nunca un castigo por no hacer algo bien.
