Sharing the Summer and Connecting with the Fall

Monthly Paint Together for the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society
Saturday September 5, 2009, 12 noon to 4 PM Homer Council on the Arts Meeting Room Members and guests welcome, all skill levels! The Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society will kick off its fall season with its monthly paint together with sharing and hands on painting. Members who attended the recent Janet Rogers workshop will share their experiences with examples and paintings from this event led by Donna Martin. DVDs of Janets demonstrations will be available to check out and the extensive KBWS library of watercolor resources will be available to also take home for the month. Following this, a hands on painting experience will be led by Mike Murray focusing on the creation of watercolor trading cards. Swatches from the Rogers exercises can be used as the starting point for these trading cards. Participants should bring their own painting materials.

TRADING CARDS: the convenient collectable art form

I had this great photo-example that Mike Murray sent, but it got lost in the computer-translation, so here is a brief encapsulation on trading cards. They are small, pack-able, mail-able, FUN and shared throughout the world....an international phenomena! Collectable cards have been around for over 100 years. Today the form has no media limits. The cards involve creating a two and a half inch by three and a half inch miniature (standard business card size) which is then sent to another person in hopes that that person will return a card he or she created for you. The cards are never sold. Cards are not limited to one medium, however our September gathering will have an emphasis on watercolor as the medium of choice. Join us in creating this exciting form of communication which knows no boundaries and brings like-souls together.. (from Artist Trading Card Workshop by Bernie Berlin c 2007).

This summer brought a full range of weather conditions from hot clear June days to smoke lled skies in July on to the rainy days of August....with all the berries and bears. Tony Clawson captured the erceness of a dry summers re season out East End Road. With this remarkable changing season and cooling weather, I often wonder if I can nd the intensity in my work that reects the character of the Alaskan seasonal experience.

CLOSE TO HOME
Art From the Heart paintings by Jan Thurston The brush is an extension of the hand, the hand is an extension of the arm and the arm is an extension of the heart. What is felt in the heart ows down the arm, the hand and the brush and so ows out onto the paper. Jan takes from oriental teachings in her works. After recovering from brain surgery last January, Jan found courage and returned to her studio and started to paint. To be alive is to be creative...... I learned once again to trust the source. Jans show opened at the Fireweed Gallery in June.

Marybee Kaufmans Still Swimming show at the Fireweed Gallery in August brought together watercolor and a love of handmade books. (photo by Donna Martin)

Judy Dickson participated in the Bunnell Gallerys June Exhibit, Skin Sisters, a show dedicated to Fran Reed, a reknown Alaskan sh skin artist. To commemerate her work and spirit, Judy joined a group of artists who shared their own work based on Frans teachings. Happy Life Freedom by Judy Dickson After Frans memrial service an eagle was released into the wild. When I returned home an eagle was sitting on the radio tower awaiting my arrival. Since then, the eagle has come regularly. One day the eagle was sitting up on the tower with red feathers, just like the wigs Fran often wore to the Happy Life gatherings. She has been freed! Most of the sh skins in this piece are rocksh. There are a few pieces of salmon and halibut skin, all of which Fran used in her containers. The vignettes are courtesy of Linda Lucky and the Happy Life Calendar.
