SUMMER in KACHEMAKBAY
The warm days of summer turn to visions of paintings for the winter months.
Paula Dickeys famous Rhubarb Crunch. Thank you Paula! Yum Yum
Mix our, oatmeal, brown sugar, butter and cinnamon until crumbly. Press half of this into 9 x 9 inch pan. Cover crumb mixture with diced rhubarb. Combine sugar, cornstarch, water and vanilla and cook until thick and clear. Pour sauce over rhubarb Top with remaining crumbs and bake at 350 for 45 to 60 minutes.
This summer brought a full range of weather conditions from hot clear June days to smoke lled skies in July on to the rainy days of August....with all the berries and bears. Tony Clawson captured the erceness of a dry summers re season out East End Road. With this remarkable changing season and cooling weather, I often wonder if I can nd the intensity in my work that reects the character of the Alaskan seasonal experience.
CLOSE TO HOME
Art From the Heart paintings by Jan Thurston The brush is an extension of the hand, the hand is an extension of the arm and the arm is an extension of the heart. What is felt in the heart ows down the arm, the hand and the brush and so ows out onto the paper. Jan takes from oriental teachings in her works. After recovering from brain surgery last January, Jan found courage and returned to her studio and started to paint. To be alive is to be creative...... I learned once again to trust the source. Jans show opened at the Fireweed Gallery in June.
Marybee Kaufmans Still Swimming show at the Fireweed Gallery in August brought together watercolor and a love of handmade books. (photo by Donna Martin)
Judy Dickson participated in the Bunnell Gallerys June Exhibit, Skin Sisters, a show dedicated to Fran Reed, a reknown Alaskan sh skin artist. To commemerate her work and spirit, Judy joined a group of artists who shared their own work based on Frans teachings. Happy Life Freedom by Judy Dickson After Frans memrial service an eagle was released into the wild. When I returned home an eagle was sitting on the radio tower awaiting my arrival. Since then, the eagle has come regularly. One day the eagle was sitting up on the tower with red feathers, just like the wigs Fran often wore to the Happy Life gatherings. She has been freed! Most of the sh skins in this piece are rocksh. There are a few pieces of salmon and halibut skin, all of which Fran used in her containers. The vignettes are courtesy of Linda Lucky and the Happy Life Calendar.
