IV B.Tech. (CCC) Regular Examinations, December 2008 ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING (Civil Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks:100 Answer any FIVE Questions All Questions carry equal marks

1. Design an RC slab culvert for a national highway to suit the follwing data a twolane carriage way (7.5 m wide) footpaths on either side (1 m wide) Clear span = 6m Wearing coat = 80mm Width of the bearing = 0.4m Materials : M 20 grade concrete Fe 415 grade HYSD bars. Loading : IRC class AA tracked vehicle Design the RC deck slab and sketch the details of reinforcements in the longitudinal and cross-sections of the slab. [20] 2. An RC T-beam Girder bridge is having the following data. Clear width of road way 7.5m Span (c/c of bearing ) 14.5m Live load IRC class AA tracked vehicle Average thickness of wearing coat 80mm. Materials M 20 and Fe 415 Using courbons method compute the design moment and shears, design the deck slab and main girder. Draw the details of reinforcement in the deck slab and main girder of T-beam girder bridge. [20] 3. A pratt truss girder through bridge is provided for single broad gauge track. The eective span of bridge is 50 m the cross girders are spaced 5m a part.The stringers are spaced 2m between center lines. 0.7Kn/m stock rails and 0.5 Kn/m check rails are provided. Sleepers are spaced at 0.5m from center to centre and are of size 2.8m X 250 mm X 250 mm. Weight of timber may be assumed 7.5Kn/m3 the main girders are provided at a spacing of 7m between their center lines. Design the central vertical and diagonal of central panel. The bridge is to carry standard main line loading. [20] 4. A deck type plate girder bridge is provided for a single broad gauge track and standard main line loading. The total span of main girder from center to center of bearing is 24m. The main girders are provided at a spacing of 1.3m between their center lines 0.6 Kn/m stock rails and 0.4 Kn/m guard rails are provided. The weight of fastenings may be taken as 0.2Kn/m the sleepers are spaced at 400 mm from centre to center and are of 2.0 m X 250 mm X 250 mm in size. The unit weight

of timber may be assumed as 7.5 Kn/m3 . The oor is open deck type. Design the maximum section of the main plate girder. [20] 5. A concrete chimney of height 70 m with the external diameter of the shaft being 4m at top and 5m at bottom is required in a place where the wind intensity is 1.8 Kn/m2 thickness of re brick lining = 100 mm, temperature dierence between the inside and outside of shift = 800 C, permissible bearing pressure on soil at site = 180 Kn/m2 adopt M 25 grade concrete mix and Fe 415 grade. Design the base section of the chimney. [20] 6. Design a dog-logged staircase for a public building to be located in a stair case room 6 m long and 3m wide. Use M 25 and Fe 415 steel. Height between oors = 3.6 m, live load on stairs = 6 Kn/m2 the stairs supported on beams over walls. [20] 7. Design cylindrical tank wall, bottom ring beam, conical dome of intz type water tank of 1.2 million litres capacity supported on an elevated lower comprising of 8 columns. The base of the tank is 16 m above ground level. Adopt M 25 and Fe 415 steel. [20] 8. Design an overhead riveted steel rectangular at bottom tank of capacity 7000 litres. The available width of plates is 1.22 m and lengths upto 6.1 m. The staging consists of 4 columns, spaced 4.88 m X 3.66 m and the bottom of the tank is 9.14 m above the ground level. Design the thickness of the plates, T- sections and stays. [20]

A reinforced concrete (single span) J- beam bridge is to consist of 5 beams 1.75 m apart the span of bridge is 12.0 m clear width end bearings of 600 mm. The L.L. on the bridge is 17000 N/mm2 including impart. The carriage way over the bridge is to be 7.0 m width with a foot path of 1.5 m width on either side. The loading on the foot path may be taken as 3900 N/m2. Design the bridge. Ux M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. [20] Design a concrete chimney of 80 m height. The external diameter of shaft is 5.0 m through out the chimney is to be designed for wind pressure in Delhi area. [20] Derive the expressions for: i) Meridional thrust ii) Hoop stress in a spherical domes.

Design a deck type of girder Railway Bridge for broad gauge main line loading. Clear span is 20 m; Effective span = 25.0 m. Overall length is 26.0 m; Centres of piers is 26.2 m. Take fb = 147 N/mm2. [20] Design the top lateral bracing and bottom lateral bracing for the through type truss girder Railway Bridge for a single broad gauge track. The truss contains 8 panels of each 5m span and a height of 6.0 m. Subjected to UDL of 20kN/m through out the span. [20] What forces are acting on the steel chimney and explain them. Explain different types of chimneys and assumptions in steel chimneys.

The chimney has a fire brick liming of 100 mm thickness mm, provide up to a height of 2 mm above base with an air gap of 100 mm. Assume the temperature of gases above the surrounding air as 2400 C. Take for R.C.C as 11 x 10-6 ph 0C and Es = 2.05 x 105 N/mm2. Use M20 grade concrete. [20]

Design an underground rectangular tank hmx 6 m x 2 m dup . The subsoil unit weight is 16000 N/m3 and angle of friction of 340. The subsoil water level is at a greater depth. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. [20]

7. Design a self supporting steel chimney of 100 m height. The diameter of cylindrical shell is 4m. The chimney has a 100 m thick brick liming supported on the shell.[20] 8. Design an elevated circular steel tank for 3,00,000 liters capacity with circular girder supported on eight number of columns. The shape of bottom may be assumed suitable. The roof and staging for the tank need not be designed. [20]
