Assignment of Organization Behaviors on JOB SATISFACTION

Job Satisfaction is a collection of Feeling that an individual had towards his /her Job. Job Satisfaction represent an individuals Attitude rather than a Behavior Dubrins; has defined Job satisfaction in term of Pleasure and Contentment as: Job satisfaction is the amount of pleasure or contentment associated with a job. If you like your job intensely, you will experience high level of job satisfaction or if you dislike your job, you will experience a Job dissatisfaction.

DETERMINANTS OF JOB SATISFACTION:


All Factors which provide a fit among individual variables, nature of Job and situational variables determine the degree of job satisfaction. FACTORS AFFECTING JOB SATISFACTION: 1. Individual Factors: Individual have a lot of expectation from their Job; If the expectations are met from the job, one feels satisfied. These expectations are based on an individuals level of Education, Age and several other Factors. Level of Education: It is a Factor which determines the degree of Job satisfaction. Several studies show negative correlation between the level of Education and Job satisfaction, Generally highly educated people have very high expectation from their jobs, which remain unsatisfied. Age: Individual experience different degree of Job satisfaction at different stages of their life. Job Satisfaction is higher at the initial stage, get gradually reduced and finally dips to a low at the end of the career; because of the fear of retirement and Future outcome. Other Factors: There are several other factors like Unfavorable Social and Family life and several other Personal Problems associated with an Individual.

2. Nature of Job: Nature of job determine job satisfaction, which is in form of Occupational level and Job content. a. Occupational level: Higher level of Job Provide more Satisfaction as Compared to a lower level; due to the Prestige and Status associated with it, they itself become a source of satisfaction. b. Job Content: Job content refers to the intrinsic(naturally) value of Job which depends on the requirement of skills for performing it and the degree of responsibility and growth it offers. A routine and repetitive Job provides lesser satisfaction. 3. Situational Variable: Situational variable relates to job satisfaction in Organizational context-Formal and Informal. Formal organization is created by the management and defines Authority and Responsibility while Informal Organization emerges out of the interaction of Individuals in an organization. Some of the important factors which affect Job satisfaction are: a. Working conditions: Condition of Work place and Facilities for performing the Job determine job satisfaction. These work in 2 ways: i. These provide means for Job Performance. ii. Provision of these conditions affects the individuals Perception about the Organization. b. Supervision: The Type of Supervision affect the Job Satisfaction as in each type of supervision the degree of importance of Individual varies; like Employee Oriented supervision or Job Oriented Supervision; these supervisions generally decrease job satisfaction. c. Equitable Rewards (Justice): If the reward is perceived (understand) to be based on the job performance and equitable, it offer higher satisfaction but if the reward is perceived to be based on considerations other than the job performance, it affects job satisfaction adversely. d. Opportunity for Promotion: Apart from the Job Nature and work Environment; there is also a great need of Opportunity for Promotion in a Job for Job Satisfaction. e. Work Group : Individuals working in a group, either created Formally or Informally; to the extent such groups are cohesive, the degree of satisfaction is high and if group is not cohesive the job satisfaction is low.

Effect of job satisfaction: Job Satisfaction has a great impact


both on Individuals life and on Organization. These effects can be broadly classified into:

Physical and Mental Health: The Degree of job satisfaction affects an Individuals Physical and Mental health. Job satisfaction affects the individual psychology which ultimately affects his physical health. Productivity: There are two views about the relationship between Job Satisfaction and Productivity. (A) A Happy worker is a productive worker. (B) A Happy worker is not necessarily a productive worker. The First view establishes a direct Cause-Effect relationship between job satisfaction and productivity, when job satisfaction increases, productivity increases and vice-versa. The basic logic behind this is that a happy worker will put more efforts for better job performance; this may not be true in all cases. The other view that is a satisfied worker is not necessarily a productive worker explains the relationship between job satisfaction and productivity.

a) Job performance leads to job satisfaction and not the other way round. The basic factors for this phenomenon are the rewards attached with performance, i.e Intrinsic and Extrinsic rewards. Intrinsic- Growth potential; Challenging job; (It increases productivity) Extrinsic-It is controlled by management such as Salary, Bonus etc; it doesnt increase productivity but increase Job satisfaction. b) A happy worker does not necessarily contribute to higher productivity because he has to operate under certain technological constraints and therefore he cannot go beyond certain output III. IV. Absenteeism: It refers to absence of a job holder due to some avoidable reasons. Highly satisfied employee, less Absenteeism-more production. Employee Turnover: Turnover of an Employee is the rate at which employee leaves the organization within a given time period. More Job Satisfaction-Less turnover. in the organization. Managers should take concrete steps to improve the level of Job satisfaction by: Job Redesigning; Improving Quality of Work life; making job more challenging and interesting; Rewards etc.
