Name: Mina Rahmani

Date of birth: 1984

Kabul
Occupation: Responsible and founder
of the Bowling salon

Kabuls First Bowling Alley:

A Bold Initiative by an Afghan Woman
14 In-flight Magazine

Strikers is one of the newest and most exciting gathering places of Kabul - especially for the young generation. This alleyis the best in the country and the first to
allow women and girls to come and play alongside
men.
Strikers was opened at a time when the youth complained of lack of places where they could hang out
and socialize. Therefore, the venue was immediately
welcomed.
When I heard about the inauguration of this bowling
alley in Kabul, I was surprised. I was interested to visit
this place as soon as possible and talk with its owners.
When I got inside the Strikers, I faced with two strong
men who were security guards. They searched me and
checked my equipment and then let me in. The security
was tight.
When I got inside the main hall, I saw a beautiful restaurant. It was clean, equipped and decorated with
beautiful flowers. For a moment I felt that I was in another country outside Afghanistan.I spent a little while
waiting before I got to see Mrs. Rahmani. The young
woman came a little earlier to greet me with a broad
smile and eagerness to share her story of Kabuls only
bowling alley.
She had left Afghanistan in 1992 with her family and
had gone to Pakistan. While in exile, she graduated
with an economics degree in Pakistan. She then moved
to Canada where she spent four years. While in Canada Mrs. Rahmani studied media and production. She
returned to Afghanistan in 2011 with a new initiative
and ready to use her experience.

She says that she noted that after years of war and
conflict, the people of Afghanistan needed a secure environment and a space away from miseries of conflict.
She created the bowling alley at a cost of over a million
dollars to provide a space of fun to Kabul residents.
I asked her how exactly the idea of building a bowling
alley came to her?
My motivation was to build an entertainment and recreation center for the people, for those who born and
grew in wars and conflicts. Whenever I travelled back
to Afghanistan from abraod, I realized that there is no
place here to spend your time with peace and happiness for few hours like the foreign countries, Therefore
when I came to Kabul, I invested one million dollars for
establishment of this place.
Considering that this game is a new sport in Afghanistan, who are the patrons of this place?
Yes, this is the first bowling alley in Afghanistan, but still
lots of people come to this placeevery day and enjoy
their time with fun and playing. This alley is made for
everyone. Mrs. Rahmaniadded with excitement: in addition to the men, women are also coming with their
families here for bowling.
Shesaid I tried to introduce and promotebowlingas a
sport which is a new in Afghanistan.
How many players visit this center daily?
About seventy visitors come to this center daily and
use its environment and its facilities.
Tell us about the facilities here?
There are twelve lanes in the alley and each can be
In-flight Magazine 15

Interview

used by up to six players, they can play their game as

a race or paly between themselves. Sometimes awards
are given for the winners to encourage them.
How much the players pay for playing?
Six players who play in one line pay 1500 AFS in an
hour.
Are the people who visit the bowling alley familiar with
bowling?
Some of them know how to play, and we have special
trainers for guiding those who are not familiar with this
game until they get to know how to play.
Tell us about bowlingas sport in the world?
Bowling sport centers are in more than ninety countries
of the world, I can say that about ninety-five million
people in the world have access to this game and enjoy
playing it.
Who are your partners in this center, tell us about
them?
In both the bowling alley and its restaurant which has
capacity of 125 people, twenty-five employees are
hired including the guards and the cleaning staff.
Are there any special facilities available for women in
this place?
Yes, in addition to men, women are also coming here
with their families. Because I am a woman and understand them better, I have devoted Sundays only for
women to come to this placewith their children. Also in
other days of the week we have provided lots of security facilities for families.
Tell us about the equipment and machinery of this center?
The machinery and all equipment we needed were imported from United State of America and some equipment from china. The machines are modern, because
of this in some cases if we want to repair them, we
have to request engineers from abroad. This process is
not an easy task from technical and economicalview
point.
Tell us about the players efforts in this period?
This bowling alley cant be compared to the bowling
alleys in the west, but we can say that our people are
talented. And I feel that our people need such a place
to develop further. During this short period, they have
been able to compete with each other and get higher
and higher scores. Some have even set records, which
others have then gone on and broken.
It is said that Bowling existed as a game in Egypt 5200
years BC. At the early times, they used a round stone
instead of the ball and they threw the stone from between three marble stones rotationally toward nine
stones which were arranged in dome form. Nowadays,
many changes have come to the techniques and the
way this interesting game is played.

Audit (IOSA).
The IOSA programme is recognized worldwide and accepted as the main evaluation system designed

The IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) is the benchmark for safety management in all airlines globally, and being compliant with the audit is a pre-requisite of IATA membership.
Safi AirwaysIOSA Registration is a matter of pride for the owners and management of the airline. The

in Afghanistan

In last decade many Internet companies have established in Afghanistan, which haveopened many
door for the people of this country, as Internet has enabled them to communicate better and become
familiar with and interested in modern technology.

The Ministry of Communications and Information

Technology of Afghanistan recently announced a
decrease in the prices of Internet access in the
country as optical fiber Internet connection is introduced. A move much welcomed by the people. The
new system brings the price of Internet to 1MB/sec
to 900 dollars.
According to the ministry officials, with the reduction of internet prices and expansion of telecommunication and information technology services,
more people are moving toward use of the internet
predominantly for communication which is increasing linking Afghanistan to the world.
The optical fiber network project, a key communication project in the country headed by the Afghan
Government, started in 2007 and connected Afghanistan with Iran, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
This project had a one hundred and two million dollar investment in Afghanistan. This was one of the
biggest communication projects in the history of the
country.
Optical fiber system transmits information through
the light beams at high speed and its price is relatively cheaper than the other ways of communications. Establishing Fiber-optic network and connecting to the region countries including Tajikistan
and Uzbekistan provides more opportunity in the
future with using internet.
In the years 2001 to 2002 by the arrival of mobile
20

technology in the country, the Internet also opened its

way and promoted in Afghanistan. At the time, the
Internet services in Afghanistan were provided by
satellite link at a cost of 1 MB/sec 4000 dollars. But
after to the rapid improvements of telecommunication
and Internetservices and also implementing this fiberoptic project the price of 1MB/sec Internet reduced to
1500 dollars in 2010. With further developments in
this field, the Internet prices reduced day by day and
peoples access to Internet grew.
Now, many of the mobile phone companies are also
providing Internet services.
Samiullah who is a university student says: I am using Internet on my mobile, its always with me and its
important to me because it is helping me in all aspects of my life. With the little money I spend on it,
what it provides me is excellent.
Javid, a Kabul resident, says: My brother is in London with his family and I communicate with them once
or twice a week via Internet at a very cheap price.
Fatana, who is the employee of a foreign NGO said:
Most of my work is with Internet, it has solved all my
office and personal communication issues. It makes
me familiar with the new and modern technology.
Connecting with voice and video chatting is something that Afghans have taken up a lot as Internet
prices have decreased. Communicating via Internet
is far cheaper than other telecommunication means
and this has led the people in Afghanistan tostart using Internet at their home to communicate with their
friends or families abroad.
Telecommunication Minister Mr. AmirzaySangin,
talked about the importance of the development in
the Internet services provision in the country: Fiberoptic internet services are provided by Afghan Telecom Company and this company has reduced the

price of internet drastically at times as cheap as

$300. These services are available for all the internet
supplier companies from April of 2012.
Ministry of Telecommunication is trying to make people more familiar with modern technology and to use
Internet benefits, connect to the world and be aware
of world events.
Gull Mohammad Rastmand, Chairman of Afghan
Telecom Company talked about the growth of Internet service providers in the country: Internet has
created new facilities in different areas. At the presence, forty companies who are registered of the Ministry buy Internet services in lower prices and supply
Internet for their users.
According to the chairman of the Afghan Telecom
Company, Internet services were launched eleven
years ago in 2001 in the country. Currently more than
two million people are using Internet in the country.
Mr. Rastmand added: In total, more than eighteen
million people are using cell phones and most of
these subscribers have access to Internet through
Mobile.

Babur Garden
A Oasis in Kabul

Babur Garden, with five hundred-years of history, is enjoying the influx visitors.
Beautifully restored and artfully designed, this
garden, provides an area of relaxation and tranquility. The garden, spread over more than fifty
acres of land has hundreds of visitors daily after
the rehabilitation.
Khair Mohammad Kahirkhah of the Babur Garden gave the brief history of the garden: After
Zahirudin Babur conquered Afghanistan in the
beginning of 16th century, he selected a piece of
land with size of fifty eight acres for building this
garden and asked to be buried there once he
died.
Mr. Khairkhah said that when Babur died in 1530
in Jumna of India, his body was, according to his
wishes, brought to Kabul after ten years and buried in this garden on the fifteenth floor.
The garden was maintained and repaired by Baburs descendants and especially his grandson
Shah Jahan who later built a mosque, named
Shah-Jahani in red mural and exotic materials.
22

In-flight Magazine

He used stones from Kabul to make the pool and

waterfalls in the garden. From the period of Baburs rule until the end of Moghulrule, Kabul had
great reputation among historians with its green
gardens and beautiful sceneries.
This interest continued.
According to Deputy Director of this garden, the
Queens castle is one of the Amir Abdul Rahman
Khans memorial castles, which is located at the
Southeast of the Babur garden. The beautiful
Queen Castle is now used as a restaurant. It is
also used to hold training programs, press conferences and meetings. The castle has two floors
and the entrance gate is at the north corner of the
garden, giving it splendid views.
At the East side of the garden, a very large swimming pool is located. It is a good source of income
because in the summer lots of people come to this
pool for swimming in exchange for a fee. The Babur Shah and RoqiyaBigum graves are located at
the South of the swimming pool.
The garden was destroyed during the civil war.

However, it was restored beyond its pre civil war

glory through an agreement between the Ministry
of Information and Culture, the Municipality of Kabul and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The restoration started in 2002. The reconstruction project took five years and five million dollars budget
and was finally completed in 2007.
Ahmad Shah Wardak, Operational Chief of garden old the Safi In-flight magazine: the garden,
with its five hundred years of history is one of the
oldest gardens of Kabul. After, Zahir Mohammad
Babur, built it after capturing Kabul in 1504, for
nearly four hundred years this garden was the resort of rulers and kings and some of the rulers
added new buildings to the garden. The doors of
the garden opened for public visiting in 1930 in
the reign of Nadir Khan and this place became
one of the most visited attraction in the city.
Mr. Wardak said,Babur was fascinated by the nature and weather of Kabul. He extensively wrote
about kabuls weather and its terrain in his book,
Baburnama. According to this book, Babur chose

Kabul as his summer capital from where he controlled his vast empirethat covered area form
Central Asia and Khorasan to the Indian subcontinent.
Babur, Omar Shaikhs son, is a descendant of
Amir Timur and Lady QatalaghNegar, descendent
of Genghis. He was born in 14th of February in
1483 in Fergana.Babur was eleven years old
when he inherited his fathers empire. After lots of
wars with Uzbek and Tatar rulers in Central Asia,
he stepped towards Kabul and mythical land of
India at the age of 21.
This historic garden and its buildings are now a
source of income for the government.
Mr. Wardak said: currently Pavilion building is one
of the business centers of the garden where the
government and Companies conferences are
held here and pay rent.
According to Mr. Wardak, lately this historic garden has experienced an increase in visitor numbers, as the news of its tranquility and beauty
spread. He said that more than five hundred people visit this garden on ordinary days and on
Thursdays and Fridays, which are holidays;up to
seven thousand people visit the garden. In the
first day of the 1391 (the solar year), the garden
had about forty thousand visitors, which in four
days this figure has increased to one hundred
thousand.
The officer of this garden says that the visitors of
this garden mainly Afghan families and citizens
and also foreign tourists. In addition to the greenery, the existence of historic buildings, spectacular areas, beautiful colorful flowers and tall mature
trees add to the beauty of this garden. Its green
hills adorned with natural stone stairs that gives
scenic beauty to this place and attract the attention of every visitor.

the historic buildings.

Razia, who lives in Kabul and has come to this
place with her children and sister-in-law said:
This is the first time we have come to this garden and its really nice and safe place and we
will certainly come back again.
Sattar, who introduced himself as a government
employee, says: we have come here with family for fun; we have come here many times. It is
a green garden with fresh and pleasant weather.
Baburs garden is open to the public for relaxation, picnics and swimming daily in exchange
of 20 Afghanis (10cents). According to the head
of this garden, the garden is a good source of
income and is self-sufficient now. The revenues
of the garden are spent to protect and preserve

A Space of Tranquility and Fun

Kabul Zoo was founded in 1967 and was once revered in the past for being one of the best wildlife
gardens in the region. It is located in on the right side of Dehmazang Road. While being a fun place
for children and families to visit, the zoo is also a place for zoological research in the country.
Kabul Zoo officials say that the zoo was completely destroyed, its animals killed during the civil war,
as it is located in the area that served as the front line between different factions. Prior to the civil
war, the zoo was home to over seven hundred animals of ninety species most were lost.
In 2001, the Kabul Municipality, started to rebuild the zoo. Now the zoo is one of Kabuls top attractions visited by families, singles and tourists that enjoy the attractions growing wild life, greenery
and beauty.
As you enter Kabul Zoo, you can see a trimmed open green space. Municipal workers are busy
cleaning the space, in anticipation of the days visitors. The wild animals are resting as the spring
breeze blows. This is my first time in the Kabul Zoo and I am enjoying the nature, the greenery, the
wild animals and the famous Kabul Spring breeze.

The peacocks in the zoo attract my attention. As

they open their feathers and show the full extent of
their beauty, I praise Allahs powers of creating
beauty. I ask the zookeeper about these peacocks.
He says they have six rare and beautiful peacocks
in the zoo. These peacocks attract most visitors and
they enjoy showing their beauty as people gather
around their cage.
I set off to speak with visitors to the zoo who have
gathered around benches taking a break with their
children. I speak with Torpikay, a mother from Macroryan area of Kabul. She says, my family come
here at least twice a week, this is fun and safe place,
better than other options we have in Kabul.
Ashraf sitting nearby was with his son said: it is a
nice and beautiful place; I mostly come here with
my son because he loves animals.
The zoo also has a small aquarium. There are ten to
fifteen types of fish kept in aquarium that meet the
international standards. I watch the fish, beautiful
and innocent, swimming around their homes.
The animals are feed and looked after by the zookeepers in a professional and untiring manner. The
zookeepers showed me how the fish are fed and
their water is oxygenated. I was impressed by their
dedication, professionalism and commitment
AzizullahSagheb, incharge of the Kabul Zoo told the
Safi In-flight reporter:
Currently, about ninety types of birds and animals
such as; lion, bear, deer, pigs, rabbits, wolves, monkeys, peacocks, Ghazh cows, fish and other animals are kept at the zoo. Their total number is over
five hundred and they are kept by professional and
experienced personnel.
He added: five hundred thousand spectators visited the zoo last year, of which ten thousand were
students who came for scientific research and learning. The spectators pay, incesaing the revenues of
the government, while the students visit the zoo for
free.
He also noted that the Economic Cooperation Organization has donated 1.2 million dollars to rebuild

the Kabul Zoo, this money has been spent to create

a research center, an animal hospital, window for
the animals, water supply and building some office
space for the zoo staff. Eighty percent of the reconstruction and work of this project is complete.
Mr. Sagheb believes that the changes made to the
Zoo recently have resulted in increased revenues
of the Kabul Zoo and this trend will continue as the
spectator number rise as the development continues.
He said that one of his future plans was to ensure
the international standards are met when it came to
animals cages and housing. More acquisition of
more space, between ArtalBridge andGozargaBridge will start soon to expand the area of the zoo
and grow the relaxation gardens.
The zookeeper said: Kabul Zoo has joinedthe
South Asian Zoo Association for Regional Cooperation (SAZARC) a while backand has also recently
joined WAZA (World Association of Zoos and
Aquariums). This will help the zoo by giving it access to resources and learning opportunities.
A scientific research center has been established
for students in the Kabul Zoo. Students that visit
this center will be learnt about wildlife, animals,
care of animals, public awareness and urbanization
by experienced teachers. The center provides material such as brochures and study material to the
students too.
Animal clinic with qualified doctors is also available
in the zoo, if an animal gets sick, it is treated in the
center easily and convieniantly. The foods for the
animals are being cooked under the South Asia
Zoos international standards and every animal has
its especial food. There are presently, seventeen
employees working in the Zoo, which will soon
grow by another fifteen employees.
Mayor of Kabul, Mohammad YunusNawandish has
big plans for the zoo. He says that soon the zoo will
grow, as it is too small for a city with Kabuls growing population and size. The international community has pledged aid to continue to grow the Kabul
zoo too. So watch out for a better and bigger zoo in
future and if you have time visit the zoo when you
are in Kabul next.

Afghan
Carpet
as anational and international
identity
for
Afghan
people

Weaved with the Afghan culture and economy, Afghan

carpetis unrivaledin quality and beauty in the world
market. The beautiful Afghan carpets have brought an
income to the country while representing the country
abroad.
General Manager of Industrial Development and Export, Mir ZamanPopaltold Safi Magazine:
Afghan carpet has a special popularity and reputation
in the global carpet markets and mostly it is exported
to Turkey, India, Russia, Central Asia and China.
According to Mr. Popal, in an exhibition which was
held in Dubai International Airport in 2012, dozens of
carpet producing and exporting companies from Iran,
Pakistan, China, Germany, France, England, USA, India, and other countries were participated and Afghanistan Carpet gained the first prize.
He says that currently different kinds of carpets like
silk carpets, wooden color carpets, Khan Mohammadi
carpets, Andkhoi and Ghazaghicarpets are most popular and enjoy higher more sales than other Afghan
carpets.
He, however, points to he issue of the lack of export
routes sea and air routes in particular that is an obstacle in the development of the carpet industry in the
country.
He add that lack of industrial parks where carpets
could be processed is yet another problem. Traders
now have to send their woven carpets to Pakistan for
cutting, dying and processing. Then the carpets are
exported to the European countries from there. Pakistan earns a large percentage of the profit and in
some cases when the Afghan carpets transfer to Pakistan they are marked and supplied as Pakistani car32 In-flight Magazine

pets in the world markets and it is a big loss for Afghanistan trade.
He says that he has been lobbying the Afghan government to establish industrial parks and processing
factories for the carpet merchants to reduce their
problems and strengthen investment in the development of the carpet industry.Mr. Popal said, the major
centers of carpet production are in the Faryab, Jowzjan, Balkh, kunduz, Takhar, Baghlan and Herat provinces.
He named carpet designs such as Filpae, AqchaGol,
Chakosh, Lab Jabar, Adraskani, Sulaiman, KhawjaRoshna, Morigol, Saroughi, Waziri, Bashiri, Alma Gol,
Bukharin, ZaherShaee, Bargaee, ChanarGol, Ali
Khawja, JawalGol, and Towlagh as the most used designs at the moment. Carpets with these designs are
not only used to cover floors but also used to make
wall hanging, furniture, car seats, horse blanket, bags
and decorations in general.
He added that Afghan carpet weavers have recently
started to use different and new designs. Images of
prominent personalities such as government, maps,
animals and birds pictures, flags, religious scripture
and images of historic places are increasing being
women into carpets. In his opinion, the new designs
have more sales and people buy them both in and
outside the country.
Shamsullah, one of the people who returned from
London to visit his relatives in Afghanistan, says: Afghan Carpets have more value and price outside the
country. Most of the Afghans use homemadeAfghan
carpets at their homes in London and I also want to
buy twohomemade carpets and will take them with

me to London.
Noria a Kabul resident says: I love Afghan
Carpet because of its durability and its special beautiful designs. Afghan carpets are
very valuable because they are handmade
and they are truly unique.
Noureddin, a carpet seller from Kabul said:
Most of the people buy Iranian and Turkish
machine made carpets because they are
cheaper than Afghan carpets. The majority
of Afghan people do not have the financial
ability to buy Afghani Carpets.
It is said that the Afghan Carpet outlast many
other carpets most surviving thirty years of
constant use. This is because of these carpets have good quality and the fact that they
are hand woven. Afghan handmade carpets
are a little more expensive than machine
made carpets. Currently, a six-meter square
carpet sold at about 700 to 800 USD. While
the Iranian and Turkish machining carpets
price is about 100 to 200 USD for the same
size.
There will always be demand for Afghan carpets, as human , after finding food an shelter, always moved on to finding cover for
their bare floor from basic animal skins, to
tree bark and later woolen carpets, we humans have always used carpets and strived
to find the best ones.
It is said that carpet has grown considerably after 13th century in Turkey, the Caucasus, Spain, Egypt, Iran,
India, China, Turkmenistan, Tunisia and AL Maghreb. The people used it for personal and commercial usages,
and the best hand-woven carpets belonged to Kings and Sultans.
The carpet industry reached to its peak in the Middle of Asia and West of Caspian Sea and especially during
the reign of King Akbar who was one of the Moghul kings in India, the carpet industry also spread to the Indian
subcontinent. Big companies established by the efforts of Turkmen of Tabat in China and Turks near Aral Lake
then brought to other countries in the world. This industry has fully spread in Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan,
Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan.
According to published reports, currently 28 small carpet making workshops operate in Kabul, 13 in Balkh
Province, one big company in Herat and 5 companies in the west zone are busy in producing and processing
carpet. Another workshop also will be launched in producing and processing carpet in Herat soon.
Although Afghan Exporting promotion officials have complained from carpet workshops and companies for lack
of activity, still Afghan carpet took first place in several international exhibitions and expected to do well in future.

Buzkashi
ancient and traditional sport of Afghanistan

Buzkashi literally means

to grab and carry goat
and it is one of games
played in Afghanistan
and has come to symbolizes the country.

38 In-flight Magazine

Mohammad ZahirAghbar, the head of National Olympic Committee told Safi magazine: The game originates from the northern Hindu Kush, a legacy from Moghuls,
Turks, Turkmen, Uzbeks, Kazaqs and Qarqazes horse riding practices. Afghanistan
is at the tail end of locations where this game was historically played the game has
been played in the country as an organized sport since the 1920s.
While the game is the national sport of sport for Afghanistan it is also playedin the
Central Asian countries of Tajikistan, Qarghazistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
The game is thought to date back to the period of Alexander the Great and the Macedonian war when the soldiers used their combat and riding skills to pick the enemy
soldiers form their camps at night. Later these war skills turned to a sport form and
were done for entertainment.
At first a body of goat was used in this game but because of its light-weight posed
little challenge the corpse of a calf weighing around 40 kilograms started to be used.
In this game while the aim is very simple, it is challenging to achieve. Every rider aims
to pick theup the heavy corpse of the sheep from the ground and carry it and throw
into the speciallymarked circle as the opponents try and grab the sheep from him. The
game is played between individuals of team that cooperate with each other to achieve
the aim.
The head of National Olympic Committee said that in October of 1953 the prime ministry of that time Sardar Mohammad Dauod Khan launched a national tournament of
Buzkashi in Kabul on the occasion of the then King MohammdzahirSahahs birthday.
At that time the new form of Buzkashi, Gharahjaay was adapted. This version, developed by the National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan, is a team sport with two
teams of twelve players each competing with each other.
The development of Buzkashi as a sport has grown in recent years too. Mohammad
Aref, Head of Information and Communications of National Olympic Committee said:

National Olympic Committee of Afghanistan has established Buzkashi Federation in 2002. Buzkashi competitions
are held every year in autumn, winter and spring seasons in
Kabul and the northern provinces of the country under the
Federation of Buzakhshi leadership. Federation has elected
a representative in each province who takes care of all matters related to this sport.
Afghan rulers have been patrons of Buzkahshi historically
and their involvement with this sport has been a mark of
their territorial control. Outsiders have shown interest in this
game as it has appeared in popular books - Buzkashi championship was mentioned in Josef Kesals epic story in 1967
which was translated to English, Horse Men,one year later.
Most recently, Buzkashi has been depicted in movies in the
region and beyond. The Horsemen starring the legendry
actor Omer Sharif was about this sport. Witness of God is
a Bollywood film which begins with featured aBuzkashi
scene. Also Rambo lll and Kabul Express and many others have used Buzkashi shots. The energy and activity of
the sport make it a very interesting spectacle ideal for cinema.
Mr. Payman said that during the Mujahedeen regime period
the game enjoyed particular glory. The Taliban then banned
it. , In recent years the game is gaining its former glory back.
He further added: during the years Afghanistan entered to
its new stage, Buzkashi attracted the attention of political
leaders and Jihadi commanders. Most of the Jihadi commanders especially in the north keep and train pedigree
horses for Buzkashi.
In the early years of the interim Government, this game was
held in the sport clubs stadiums and all members of the international community, including foreign forces came to
watch it. Now special spaces for the game are being developed.
Buzkashi ground has two special areas, one is solvent circle and another one is flag and in some cases there is

also a separated grabbing circle.Buzkashis field is a very

large, broad and flat ground. The fans gather around the
field and the riders get ready before the referees announce
the start of the race. The riders with their own skills and also
their horses skills try to grab the calf from the Solvent circle.
This is when the game becomesinteresting as dozens of
riders start a difficult struggle for grabbing the calf and preventing the individual carrying it to the flag area and bringing
it back to the solvent circle and claiming victory.
Buzkashi has lots of fans in Mazar e sharif, Kunduz, Takhar,
Badakhshan, Baghlan, Samangan, Faryab, Jauzjan, Parwan, Kapisa and Panjshir provinces. Recently Buzkashi has
spread in the Western and Southwestern provinces of the
country and Buzkashi teams have established in Herat and
Ghour provinces too.
Buzkashi competitions have been taking place in Mazar e
sharif during the Spring Festival of Red Flower that takes
place around the Afghan New Year. These matches take
place under the watchful eye of the international and national security forces.
Buzkashi horses need special arduous training to be able to
participate in the competitions. A few days before the race,
the horses are kept hungry and are made to run long distances. These hard trainings causes that the horses have
the best stamina and not to give up against hardship in the
game.Keeping and maintaining these prized horses need
skill and a big budget.Buzkashi horses have different names
such as the gray horse Tarq, blond gray Samand, red
horse Jiran and the white horse which is called Ghazal.
These horses fetch huge prices.
The Olympic Committee of Afghanistan has started a process of registration for the Afghan Buzkashi riders and horses to gauge the extent of the games popularity and the
level of expertise in it within the country. The future plan is to
make Buzkhashi an Olympic sport.
