Review of Australian Standards. To keep abreast of progress in industry, Australian Standards are
subject to periodic review and are kept up to date by the issue of amendments or new editions as
necessary. It is important therefore that Standards users ensure that they are in possession of the latest
edition, and any amendments thereto.
Full details of all Australian Standards and related publications will be found in the Standards Australia
Catalogue of Publications; this information is supplemented each month by the magazine ‘The
Australian Standard’, which subscribing members receive, and which gives details of new publications,
new editions and amendments, and of withdrawn Standards.
Suggestions for improvements to Australian Standards, addressed to the head office of Standards
Australia, are welcomed. Notification of any inaccuracy or ambiguity found in an Australian Standard
should be made without delay in order that the matter may be investigated and appropriate action taken.

This Standard was issued in draft form for comment as DR 98166.

PREFACE

This Standard was prepared by the Standards Australia Committee CH/17, Adhesives as a
revision of AS 2329 — 1980. It forms part of a series of Standards dealing with functional
adhesives of varying chemical types that are currently used for non-mechanical fixing of
materials commonly used in the building industry.
The objective of this revision is to update materials which are specified in the 1980
edition and which are no longer available, and to include requirements for water-based
adhesives.
The principal differences between this edition and the 1980 edition are as follows:
(a) Requirements for water-based adhesives have been added.
(b) Hoop pine has been substituted for coachwood.

(c) Metal framing members are not dealt with in this Standard.
(d) The doctor blade has been replaced by a simple adhesive applicator.
(e) The grade of cotton duck for testing purposes has been changed.
Adhesives specified in this Standard may be required to bond to a variety of substrate
materials. They will generally adhere to porous substances such as timber, cement sheet,
particle board, plywood and wallboard. Adhesives in this Standard have gap-filling
properties to bridge distortion and unevenness of the framing, the brickwork, or the
concrete. They are intended for interior use only.
The Committee considered the question of non-porous substrates, but decided that there is
insufficient information available at this time for their inclusion.
Standards in this series specify quality requirements for the adhesive for the designated
purpose. In conjunction with comprehensive manufacturers’ instructions, they may be
used for subsequent workmanship warranties on bonded assemblies.
The term ‘normative’ has been used in this Standard to define the application of the
appendix to which it applies. A ‘normative’ appendix is an integral part of a Standard.

STANDARDS AUSTRALIA

Australian Standard
Mastic adhesives for fixing wallboards

1 SCOPE This Standard specifies requirements for mastic adhesives used for bonding
various porous substrates such as hardboard, cement sheet, particle board, plywood and
wallboard panels to wood framing for interior use.
The Standard does not apply to adhesives for gypsum-board or plasterboard.

2 REFERENCED DOCUMENTS The following documents are referred to in this

Standard:

1309 Glossary of terms used in the adhesives industry
1321 Methods for the sampling and testing of adhesives
1321.1 Part 1: Sampling
1321.3 Part 3: Bond strength of cured wood-to-wood adhesives in shear
2193 Methods for calibration and grading of force-measuring systems of testing
machines

3 DEFINITIONS For the purpose of this Standard, the definitions in AS 1309 and
those below apply.
3.1 Contact bond method — where the adhesive is applied to one substrate, and the
other substrate is then immediately brought into contact with the adhesive. The two
substrates are then separated, the adhesive remaining on both surfaces, and after a
nominated drying time, the two substrates are reassembled under a nominated force and
allowed to fully dry or cure.
3.2 Wet bond method — where the adhesive is applied to one substrate, and the other
substrate is then brought into contact with the adhesive after a nominated open time. The
assembly is then allowed to dry or cure.

4 PRODUCT INFORMATION The supplier shall provide all necessary information

on storage requirements and bonding procedures such as mixing, spreading, pot life, open
and closed assembly times, time at which the adhesive will support the wallboard
unassisted, as well as on shelf life and cleaning instructions.
The information may be on the pack or supplied separately for industrial applications.
Instructions for use, including cleaning up, shall be included with or printed on each retail
pack.

5 SAMPLING The adhesive sample shall be selected for testing in accordance with
AS 1321.1.
