The weight, in kilograms, of a particular brand of bags of firewood is stated to be 20 kg. However, some bags weigh more than this and some weigh less. A sample of bags is carefully weighed, and the measurements are given in the ordered stem-and-leaf plot shown. 18 8 19 5 7 7 8 8 9 20 1 1 1 2 2 5 6 8 21 0 1 1 2 4 6 22 3 22|3 is 22.3 kg

(a)

Find the median, upper and lower quartiles and maximum and minimum weights for the sample and draw a boxplot for the data.

(b)

Find: i) (ii)

the interquartile range the range.

(c)

Complete the following statements about the distribution of weights for the bags of firewood in this sample: (i) Half of the bags of firewood weighed at least ___ kg. (ii) (iii) (iv) ____ % of the bags had a weight less than 20 kg. The weights of the middle 50% of the bags were spread over ____kg. The lightest 25% of the bags had a weight of _________ kg or less.

(d)

Is the distribution of weights in this sample symmetrical, or positively or negatively skewed and why?

2. The table below shows the weight of Bills vegetables that are entered in a competition. Vegetable Pumpkin Zucchini Tomatoes Weight 5.5 kg 1.25 kg 267 g Mean 5.67 kg 1.15 kg 255 g Standard deviation 200 g 39 g 24 g

(a)

Calculate the standard score of each vegetable.

(b)

Any contest vegetables that are in the top 2.5% of their category win a $100 voucher. Does Bill win a voucher? Why/ Why not?

(c)

Chris believes that he has performed better than Bill for his vegetables. The weights of his vegetables are shown and his standardized score when compared with the other growers. Is Chris correct in his belief? Vegetable Potato Turnip Carrot Weight 500 g 1.25 kg 200 g Standardized score 0.9 0.2 2.8

3 Tomatoes are sprayed with an organic garlic and seaweed mixture. The number of sprays and the yield are record in the table below. Seaweed spray concentration (mL per L) Yield (per kg) 67 90 103 120 124 150 3 5 6 8 9 11

(a)

Identify the independent variable.

(b)

Draw a scatterplot of the data.

(c)

Determine the Pearson Correlation Coefficient and the Coefficient of Determination for the data (to 3 decimal places). Comment on the meaning of these.

(d)

Find the regression line for the data, write it in terms of the variables yield and concentration (to 2 decimal places).

(e)

Using your regression line, how many kilograms of tomatoes would you predict if you sprayed with a seaweed concentration of 15 mL/L? Is this an example of interpolation or extrapolation?
