Shaheed or Martyr And say not of those who are slain in the way of Allah: "They are dead.

" Nay, they are living, though ye perceive (it) not. (2:154)

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (through another chain of transmitters) that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: Whom do you consider to be a martyr among you? They (the Companions) said: Messenger, of Allah, one who is slain in the way of Allah is a martyr. He said: Then (if this is the definition of a martyr) the martyrs of my Umma will be small in number. They asked: Messenger of Allah, who are they? He said: One who is slain in the way of Allah is a martyr; one who dies in the way of Allah, is a martyr; one who dies of plague is a martyr; one who dies of cholera is a martyr. Ibn Miqsam said: I testify the truth of your father's statement (with regard to this tradition) that the Holy Prophet (may peace be upon him) said: One who is drowned is a martyr. Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "He (a Muslim) who dies of an Abdominal disease is a a martyr, and he who dies of plague is a martyr." English reference: Vol. 7, Book 71, Hadith 629 "The plague, abdominal illness, drowning and dying in childbirth are martyrdom." (One of the narrators) said: Abu 'Uthman narrated this to us several times, and on one occasion he attributed it to the Prophet. (Sunnan Al-Nisai) English reference: Vol. 3, Book 1, Hadith 2056

The Messenger of Allah () said, "He who supplicates sincerely for martyrdom, it will be granted to him even though he is not killed on the battlefield." [Muslim]. Arabic/English book reference: Book 12, Hadith 1322 It was narrated that Sa'eed bin Zaid said: "The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Whoever is killed protecting his wealth, he is a martyr. Whoever is killed protecting his family, he is a martyr. Whoever is killed protecting his religion, he is a martyr. Whoever is killed protecting himself, he is a martyr.'"
