PONDER ON: WHY ARE THE CLIENTS NOT SUBJECTED TO THE SAME KIND OF SCRUTINY? PROSTITUTES ARE VICTIMS OF SOCIAL DISCRIMINATION & GENDER STRATIFICATION PATRIARCHAL DOMINANCE CAN BE SEEN IN THE WAY THEYRE DEPENDENT ON MEN FOR INCOME
WORKING CONDITION Works time 10:00 am 4:00 am 1000 if taken for the whole night; escort relationship Bar girls are in a way lucky in terms of profit but are still subjected to violence Mila for instance was forced to give a guy a blowjob despite having a toothache.
SEX TRAFFICKING
- systematic transport of women and children for sex to gain profit (according to Sex Trafficking and the Globalization of the Sex Industry by Gabriela) - not just prevalent as an interstate problem, its a problem within the Philippines - Women from various provinces are tricked into working in brothels
PSYCHOLOGICAL
Stress| Depression| Anxiety |Eating disorder Post-traumatic disorder meaning of love becomes twisted Distrust and hatred for men| Anger and Rage Deep emotional pain and grieving Feelings of humiliation and dirtiness and shame Difficulty establishing intimate relationships Missed normal socialization process
MILA
LEARNED HELPLESSNESS
PSYCHOLOGICAL
There is "no evidence" that children in prostitution can ever rehabilitate. "Few children rescued from brothels have been able to begin living anything like a healthy life again. The wisdom of trying to end the prostitution of children rather than attempting to assist the victims has been confirmed.
(EPCAT coordinator Ron OGrady, Sol. F. Juvida, "Philippines - Children: Scourge of Child Prostitution," IPS, 12 October 1997)
SOCIAL ANALYSIS
What are the factors that favor trafficking of women for sex?
- Poor government policies - Dire economic condition
Patriarchal Society
Philippines as a Patriarchal society
gives more authority and liberty to the male members of the society Prostitutes as people of lower social standing
Men utilizes prostitutes to prove their virility and masculinity. Evident in pornography and some sexually-explicit shows
Women in Society
Traditionally submissive to their husbands. Prostitution as female phenomenon
Less opportunities of getting a job for ordinary women
The Church acknowledges the element of the action as an objective sin, whether it was done for the benefit. The classification of the subjectivity of the sin is heavily dependent on the knowledge, intentions, and in the circumstance of the person in the situation
The guilt of Mila is her own choice to become a prostitute, which is a subjective sin/ morally evil Her choices directed her life
VIOLATES THE CHASTITY TO WHICH HIS BAPTISM PLEDGED AND DEFILES HIS BODY
BIBLE Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own. - 1 Corinthians 6:19
The Revisionists would classify Milas actions as an Ontic evil. Her actions are considered ontic evil because of the presence of external impediments the most obvious of which would be the need for her to survive.
THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE REVISIONISTS PERSPECTIVE AND THE CHURCH IS THAT THE CHURCH CONSIDERS PROSTITUTION A SIN NO MATTER WHAT THE SITUATION IS WHILE REVISIONISTS WOULD SAY THAT MILA DID NOT REALLY COMMIT ANY SIN BECAUSE OF HER EXTERNAL IMPEDIMENTS.
[OTHER ANALYSIS]
The act of the person who recruited Mila on the other hand would be judged by Revisionists as moral evil because she had full knowledge and consent of the things that would happen to Mila once she recruited her
[OTHER ANALYSIS]
The customers that hired Mila or any other prostitutes for that matter also falls under moral evil because they were fully aware of what their actions were. They had full knowledge of how much harm they were causing the person that they wanted to sleep with
Based on the film, Selling Sex in Heaven, we can infer that prostitution is indeed a problem in sexual morality. On the part of women, CFC and CCC see prostitution as a way by which their bodies are defiled as the temple of the Holy Spirit. On the part of the client, it encourages selfish commodification of womens bodies and sex outside the sanctity of marriage. According to the CCC 2355, prostitution would remain a grave sin no matter what the circumstance. However, the gravity of the act is lessened if prostitution is caused by destitution, blackmail, or social pressure. Prostitution would be judged as a moral sin if the act is done with full consent and knowledge. Prostitution is considered by revisionists as an ontic evil if the act is caused by external impediments much like what the documentary portrays.
