MobileAccess Technical Bulletin Base Unit Purpose:

The purpose of this Technical Bulletin is to provide direction if a Base Unit has one or both of the following issues: 1. Higher than normal downlink and uplink gain when the system is commissioned in Passive Mode. There is no issue when the user changes the Interface Type to RIU Mode during commissioning. 2. Downlink RF level into base unit is reported higher than actual input level. This would be identified during commissioning because the DL Power shows 6 to 7 dB higher than the actual input power and the unit is in an alarm condition. This occurs in both Passive and RIU modes.

Scope
The scope of this technical bulletin is limited to the following piece of equipment and issue(s): Base Unit - High Uplink and Downlink Gain Base Unit - Input Level Reported Higher than Actual

Solution/Action Plan
If one of both of the symptoms described above is observed, then the software batch file must be executed on the affected base unit. Follow the instructions in this bulletin to implement the fix. NOTE:

Warranty will be voided if this patch is not installed on the affected equipment.

Test Equipment Required

Laptop computer (Windows XP, Windows 7) RS-232 serial (DB9) with USB dongle (included with controller) BU_Patch_File_Jun_2010.zip (see instructions below on how to obtain the patch file) MCT software on laptop to verify correct settings latest version: http://www.mobileaccess.com/downloads (or http://www.mobileaccess.com/filedownload to be redirected to new location) Spectrum analyzer

Troubleshooting Steps
1. Download the BU_Patch_File_Jun_2010.zip from http://www.mobileaccess.com/downloads. This file can also be requested from TechSupport@MobileAccess.com. Please note that this is an 11 MB file that may be blocked by some servers due to size. 2. Double-click on the Setup_CPD_Tool_0_1.exe file and follow the setup wizard instructions. 3. Connect the COM port of the laptop to the base unit (OPTM device) using the RS232 cable provided 4. Open the CPD_Tool application and click on Port. 5. Select the appropriate COM port for a serial interface and click OK.

6. Click Connect. a. If the wrong COM port is selected, then a window will pop up stating Port Open Error. b. If the correct COM port is selected, the program will run. 7. When the program is complete, a window will pop up stating NVRAM updated successfully. a. If the RS232 cable is disconnected, a window will pop up stating Port Open Error. b. If the unit is not affected by either problem, then a window will appear stating Serial #_________ is not found in database. 8. When the program has been successfully been executed or if the unit is unaffected, click on Disconnect in the program. 9. Close the program.

Verify Problem Resolution

To verify that the problem has been resolved in the base unit, use the MCT software to log in to the module. 1. For the higher than normal downlink and uplink gain issue, click on the Advanced Tab and observe the Downlink DCA Status Actual DCA value and Uplink Common DCA Value User defined values are between the 20 & 29 dB for Passive mode and 5 & 6 dB for RIU mode. 2. For the downlink RF level into base unit being reported higher than actual input level, click on the Advanced Tab and observe the Power- DL Power reading is the same as the known input level in to the base unit. As an additional quality control check, a spectrum analyzer can be used to verify the actual RF input level.
