2013
hofstra.edu/apply

Congratulations
on your decision to apply to Hofstra University.
At Hofstra, every application receives individual attention and special care. We realize that each applicant is unique, and through our review of your application, we seek to discover your own exceptional qualities. Just as we are reviewing you, we know that you are reviewing us. Every university has its own qualities and advantages that students need to weigh carefully. We believe that the combination of renowned faculty who are devoted to excellence in teaching as well as scholarship, small classes, and a dynamic campus environment located near New York City makes Hofstra an excellent choice. If you have not done so already, we strongly encourage you to plan a visit to our campus. A visit allows you to experience firsthand the wealth of opportunities we offer our undergraduate students. At the back of this publication you will find information about visiting. Please feel free to call our Office of Admission at 1-800-HOFSTRA if you need further assistance.

a distinct experience
Imagine a college experience that combines outstanding faculty, small classes, a multitude of study abroad options, vibrant extracurricular life and a campus so beautiful it has been recognized as an arboretum. Now, add to this New York City and all the amazing internship opportunities and cultural experiences that abound. Sound too good to be true?

Hardly. This is Hofstra University!

At Hofstra you will live and learn in a community of first-rate professors who place a priority on teaching. You will share your classrooms, residence halls, clubs and organizations with students from nearly every U.S. state and 50 countries. You will have the chance to explore majors ranging from accounting to African studies, English to engineering, and finance to film. And you will do all this on a campus bursting with vitality, including 200 student clubs and organizations, 37 residence halls, 17 NCAA Division I sports, and more than 500 cultural events and activities planned each year. Then there is New York City. The city is less than an hour from our campus and easily accessed by a shuttle to the local train station. Whether exploring the museums, theaters, neighborhoods and parks that make New York City the worlds cultural nexus, or interning at top businesses and organizations in the worlds capital for finance, communications, entertainment, law and international trade, you will find the city a resource like no other.

a teaching faculty
Recipients of our nations top honors, including Emmy Award winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as Guggenheim, National Endowment for the Humanities and New York Public Library Fellows, our faculty are worldrenowned for their expertise.

More important, our faculty are devoted to teaching. Only faculty not graduate assistants teach our courses, and we keep classes small so that interaction between student and professor becomes an inherent part of the classroom experience. The bonds you build here naturally lead to future endeavors in which you might help a professor with a research project or seek a professors guidance with regard to graduate or professional school.

Theres no cookie-cutter mold here. We get to know students as individuals their strengths and challenges. And we help them reach their potential.

expand your world

Students today need an education that prepares them for an interconnected world. The rapid expansion of world trade, the Internet and the global nature of news organizations continually remind us that, in order to be successful, students need an extensive awareness of other cultures and societies. Your exposure to a deeper understanding of the world begins at Hofstra, where you will interact with students from 47 U.S. states and territories and 50 countries who are choosing from about 140 undergraduate program options and 200 clubs and organizations. The student from Vermont who comes to Hofstra to study music and the student from Peru who is here to study computer science may meet through their shared interest in writing for the student-run weekly newspaper. Next, you have New York City, which has always been one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. Our students constantly utilize the city as an interactive educational and professional resource. With the United Nations, multinational corporations, and ethnic neighborhoods such as Chinatown and Little Italy, a day in New York City is like a trip around the world. Hofstras study abroad programs complement experiences on campus and in New York City. With programs in Australia, China, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands and Spain, Hannah Skahill and a program that tours all of Europe, our students have an B.A., Global Studies and Geography extraordinary array of opportunities to explore the world. All of our (dual major) study abroad programs allow you to earn Hofstra credits and are taught by Hofstra faculty. Whether you are studying theater in London, art history in Venice, or geography of Western Europe in Europe, you will find yourself exposed to different cultures, political views and lifestyles. Immersing myself in the cultures of each country was the best, most effective way to understand the effects of what we studied, be it politics, economics, or geography The combination of experiences from New York City to studying abroad gives Hofstra students a substantial advantage after college. They are well-prepared to become leaders in their professional lives, fully cognizant of the interconnected world in which we live.

My trip with Hofstras Center for Civic Engagement to Togo and Ghana was truly transformational. It broadened my view of the world. The term lesser developed country is no longer simply a concept in a textbook. I now know some of the struggles facing an LDC and can associate the term with more than just a definition. When I hear the word Africa, I don't think of pictures in National Geographic; instead, I think of the friends I made while I was there and the experiences we shared.
