New interview-less US visa process for some categories

To draw the maximum number of Indian tourists, the US has introduced a new visa programme for certain categories, which will allow an applicant to get a visa without being interviewed in person, the US envoy said at New Delhi on Friday. US Department of State has implemented a programme that will allow certain applicants to apply for visas without being interviewed in person at a US consular office, US Ambassador to India Nancy J. Powell said at a conference in New Delhi. Under the Interview Waiver Programme, it will become easier for Indian citizens to visit US for business meetings and tourist activities, she hoped. Those applying for same category visa as granted earlier or applying at the same place (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata) where the previous visa was issued will be eligible for this new visa scheme. Besides, those who have no prior refusal for the same visa category and

whose previous visa is still valid or has expired within last four years can apply under this programme. Speaking at a tourism promotion event here, Powell expressed happiness over the fact that over 6.5 lakh Indians visited US in 2011. Travel and tourism to the US is an important way for us to expand our cultural and commercial ties and increase trade growth between our countries. Total spending by Indians travelling to the US was $4.6 billion last year, up 15 percent from the year before, she added. She said that India is expected to cross one million visitor mark by 2015 and leap into the league of top 10 countries of tourists to the US. Powell also said the Barack Obama administration will continue to find more ways to make travel from India to the US as simple as possible.

Say good bye to Low voltage

Good news for Chennaiites. The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) authorities have decided to set up six sub-stations and 1,139 distribution transformers in Chennai to help ensure optimum voltage levels. Although the city is witnessing severe voltage fluctuation issues, it was more pronounced during this summer. Protests were held in many neighbourhoods in Chennai, urging authorities to solve the problem. Against this background, the TANGEDCO authorities have taken steps on a 'war footing' to set up sub-stations and install transformers to tackle the long pending voltage issue.

Reaches 55,000 households every week

According to sources, in Chennai alone, the authorities have planned to set up six additional sub-stations, 1,139 distribution transformers and 200 capacitor banks. Now, we are looking for sufficient land to set up the new 33 KV sub-stations in the city, an official said. The additional distribution sub-stations and transformers for Chennai would be commissioned within two months, he added. "We are doing our best to improve the situation. But, we are facing many problems in identifying and acquiring the land. We had identified the land for five 11 KV substations in Chennai.

Double deck AC train to Bangalore

Southern Railway would introduce 12 new trains for Tamil Nadu, including a state-of-the-art double decker airconditioned express between Chennai and Bangalore. In the latest time table uploaded on its website, it said the 13-coach daily double decker train between Chennai and Bangalore would have stoppages at Perambur (Up direction only), Arakkonam, Katpadi, Ambur, Jolarpet, Bangarapet, Krishnarajapuram and Bangalore Cantonment. It would depart from Chennai Central at 7.25 am. Consequent to the introduction of the above AC double decker express, the timings of Train No. 12639/12640 Chennai Central-Bangalore City Brindavan (Daily) Express would be revised with effect from July 1, with the train departing from Chennai Central at 7.50 am instead of the previous 7.15 am and reaching Bangalore City at 2 pm. SRM students score over IIT in an international competition

MoU signed to impart employability skills

The city-based IT finishing School Digiterati today signed an MoU with the Md Sathak Group of Educational Institutions to impart Essential Employability Skills to their engineering students. The MoU covers all engineering colleges of Md Sathak Group at Keezhakarai in Tirunelveli district and at Siruseri. More than 10,500 students would be trained every year under the agreement. Digiterati Founder C A Ravikumar told reporters here that Engineering graduates from rural areas in particular and also citybased students were at a disadvantage in the job market because of their poor choice of courses and career paths, matching their aptitude. Many surveys have highlighted the fact that 80 per cent of engineering graduates who pass out need to be trained before they become productive for any company, IT or non-IT. Digiterati has a track record of training and certifying students in career-specific advanced IT skills which were in great demand. People who secretly admire you will feel nervous when youre talking to them and will make less eye contact. Some people avoid eye contact when theyre upset with the person theyre talking to, and sometimes also when theyre lying about something. Some movements of the body parts can be generalised to a certain extent as well. Different postures, movements and actions of various body parts are said to convey different messages for people to understand. Here are some of these: Eyes: Your eyes speak more than any other part of your body. If youre excited about something, your iris will slightly grow in size and produce a pleasant twinkle in your eyes. If youre annoyed, your eyebrows will move a little downwards towards the middle, making a frown. People also avoid eye contact and blink unnecessarily when they are lying. However, people who blink too much can also be lacking selfconfidence or might as well be dishonest or distrustful. Hands: Your hand movement is equally important. Crossing your arms or placing them in your pockets while talking to somebody can be termed as being defensive or unethical. Moving your hand way too much can also look weird most of the time. Clasping your hands, rubbing them together or touching your face or hair continuously can depict nervousness. Feet: Sitting in a chair cross-legged usually depicts arrogance, while too much unnecessary movement of the foot may depict lack of confidence. Tapping of foot is also an indication of impatience in some people. Even though many movements can be generalised, not all can convey the same message every time. Body language usually varies from people to people. Every single person has his/her own comfort zone and habits related to his/her body. Beware of breach of policy

WHEN you take an insurance policy to cover your jewellery and some other valuables against theft, loss or damage, one of the policy conditions is that you should take all 'reasonable steps' to safeguard the insured property against loss or damage. Insurance companies however sometimes go to ridiculous extent to interpret this condition, in order to repudiate the claim of the policy holder. Here is one such case where the consumer had to seek the intervention of the consumer court to get the insured amount. The chain of events leading up to the claim and the grounds on which the insurer denied the claim, tells you a lot about the attitude of insurance companies. The whole story begins with the consumer, Sachin Bhardwaj, buying two policies in September 2004 - a Householders Policy and a Vyavasayi/ Adhikari Suraksha Kavach Policy, covering all household goods, including jewellery and other valuables. After due inspection, the insurance company issued the policies -the cover for jewellery and other valuables totalled Rs 2,68,000 Two months hence, when Sachin, a resident of Noida, was returning with his wife and child, from a wedding in Aligarh, his car stalled. Sachin then decided to put his wife and child in a bus so that they could go home without delay. Since they were carrying valuables such as jewellery, video camera and a digital camera, Sachin packed these in a suitcase, put it in the car and locked it before getting into a bus that was passing by to reach the nearest bus stop from where his wife and child could leave for Noida. On his return, he found that the car, which had stalled due to overheating of the engine, started without much trouble But a kilometer ahead, an ambassador jammed into his car from behind. . Even as he got out of the car to check the damage and talk to the driver, some men got out of it, got into his car and drove away. The ambassador too disappeared. Sachin then took a ride in someone else's car and went to the police station to lodge a complaint. Subsequently, the car was found abandoned somewhere, but the suitcase had disappeared. When Sachin asked the insurer to indemnify his loss, a surveyor was first appointed to assess the loss. After a detailed survey, he came up with the figure of Rs.1,49,342, but observed that the claim need not be paid as the insured had not taken adequate care in safeguarding the valuables. More than a year later, the insurance company rejected his claim, citing breach of policy condition number 3, holding that the policy holder should not have left the suitcase in the car while boarding the bus. "Moreover, you have failed to spell out the reasons for not carrying the bag while leaving the car", the insurance company said. The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum directed the insurance company to pay the complainant s 2,48,500 towards his claim, along with interest at 9 per cent per anum. The highest consumer court, the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, in response to the revision petition of the insurance company, pointed out that in the circumstances, the steps taken by Sachin were reasonable enough to protect the insured property. Besides, the suitcase was not stolen when the insured had locked the car and gone to drop his wife and child at the bus stop. It happened much later when the insured was also in the car. The Commission also disagreed with the insurance company that Sachin should not have got off the car to examine the damage and talk to the driver of the car that had rammed into his car, leaving the ignition key in the socket. It is impractical to contend that the insured should have first secured the windows, locked the car and then gone ahead to talk to the driver or inspect the damage, the Commission said. (In any case, even if he had done it, the miscreants who outnumbered him could well have snatched the key from him) It however differed with the lower consumer courts on the valuation of the loss and said Rs 1,79,400 along with 9 per cent interest would meet the ends of justice. It also awarded costs of Rs 10,000. So whenever you buy insurance, read the policy conditions and the exclusion clauses carefully and ensure that you do not give any scope to the insurance company to repudiate your claim on grounds of breach of policy conditions. You must have heard people say that actions speak louder than words, well they say it right! Here are some of the explanations of the tiny gestures we come across almost every day: If youre travelling in the bus, observe the people who are sitting if you want to know when exactly they will get up to leave. The moment they stiffen their bodies, pick up their bags and start looking out with concentration, it means that the moment has arrived when he/she will get up, leaving the standing ones to fight for the seat. In the bus, the standing ones who are desperate to sit will keep their eyes on every person sitting. As soon as they get the slightest hint of someone getting up, they will start preparing themselves to get hold of their seat. Their level of desperation can be easily judged through their body language. Mind it, if the desperation is too much, you better not come in their way. When youll talk to somebody about something that they love most, be it an idea, a person or a thing, youll see their iris grow slightly in size with a pleasant twinkle in them. People who are extremely nervous or who lack confidence will continuously touch and settle their hair while speaking in public. Girls may do this with their dupattas as well.
