Art Review

Element: basic visual symbols that artists use. Line: the path made by a moving point. Value: lightness or darkness. Shape: a flat, 2 dimensional area enclosed by a line. Form: 3 dimensional object. Colors: light refracted through a prism. Texture: the way a surface feels or looks like it feels. Space: creating depth in an image. Blind contour: exercise where you look only at the object. Contour line: drawing that shows outer edges and inner detail clean line. Shape: a 2 dimensional area defined in some way Organic/ Freeform: shapes that are natural or free flowing. Geometric: precise shapes that can be described using a mathematical formula.

SHADING
High light: where the light shines directly on the object. Reflected light: Light that bounces off the table and back onto the object. Cast shadow: shadow that the object creates on the table from the opposite side of the light source. Core shadow: area of darkest value on the object. Soft edge: gradual change in value or rounded objects. Hard edge: sharp exchange in value on object with definite edges.

Smooth shading: using the side of the pencil to create an even value, letting no pencil lines show. Texture: the way a surface feels. Composition: the way the artwork is arranged.

COLOR: Derived from refracted light. Color has 3 properties: hue, value and intensity. Properties of color: Hue: the name of a color. Value: the lightness or darkness of a color. Add white or black to change the value, Intensity: the brightness or dullness of a color. Add the colors complement to change its intensity. Color wheel: The spectrum of color bent into a circle. There are 12 colors on the color wheel. Primaries, Secondaries and Intermediates. They have a specific place on the wheel. Primary color: are the first set of colors They are red, yellow and blue. All other colors are made from these. They are equidistant from 1 another on the color wheel Secondary colors: created by mixing 2 primaries tgt equally. Orange, Green and Violet. They are each located on the color wheel between the 2 primary that create them Red + Yellow= Orange Blue + Red= Violet Blue + Yellow: Green

Intermediate: created by mixing 1 primary and 1 secondary Primary name always comes first Yellow + Green= Yellow Green Red + Violet= Red Violet Blue+ Green= Blue Green Yellow+ Orange= Yellow Orange Red+ Orange= Red Orange Blue+ Violet= Violet Blue Intensity: Brightness or Dullness. Add its complement (opposite color) Space: Creating a feeling of depth in an artwork. Size: object appears smaller when they are farther away. Placement: fore ground= bottom of page. Overlapping: placing s.t in front or behind s.t else. Atmospheric Perspective: objects appear to have less color and detail when they are farther away. Linear Perspective: the line of an image appears to vanish at a point on the horizon line. Positive space: the area within objects. Negative space: the empty area surrounding objects.
