Recent systematic review showed a 37% increased risk of late neonatal mortality and a 23% increased risk of under-five mortality at short intervals, compared to longer intervals of 3659 months. Based on these findings, researchers recommend birth interval to be at least three years.

Summary Findings: Maternal Health

78% of pregnant women have at least 4 ANC visits. More women (58%) receive first ANC during first trimester of

pregnancy compared to 2008 (54%).

More births were delivered by Skilled Birth Attendants (73%)

compared to 2008 (62%). Reliance on Traditional Birth Attendants (hilots) is decreasing.

Assistance from Skilled Birth Attendants during home birth

varies from 73% in Central Luzon to 16% in ARMM and Davao.

Maternal mortality remains high.
FHS 2011: NSO, DOH, USAID

Summary Findings: Child Health

Vast majority of women and newborns received postnatal care

during first week after delivery.

Only 27% of all mothers practice exclusive breastfeeding. Children vaccination coverage increased from 80% (NDHS

2008) to 85% with vast majority of children receiving basic vaccination.

Both infant and under-five mortality data demonstrate steady

decrease compared with previous years. MDG targets for 2015 are feasible to achieve.
