Introduction
The Xerox WorkCentre 56xx 08 series multi function devices (MFDs) provide all the same capabilities as its predecessor WorkCentre 56xx 07 series devices, while adding features and functionality that will be both evident and transparent to the customer. This paper is intended to provide a technology overview to help field personnel and IT organizations to understand the similarities and differences between these two products. It is also intended to help minimize certification efforts so you can more quickly, and cost effectively, introduce the new features and functionality offered by the WorkCentre 56xx 08 to enhance your customers work environment. The WorkCentre 56xx 08 product family is built on the same core platform as the WorkCentre 56xx 07 series. This paper outlines the additional features as well as the degree of change in each of the functional areas of the device.
Configurations
The WorkCentre 56xx 08 series introduces a new software release across the range of products already available in the WorkCentre 56xx 07 series. Additionally, a new single board controller (SBC) architecture has been introduced into the 5632, 5638, 5645 and 5655ppm configurations to enable some new capabilities including 1Gb Ethernet and on-board USB printing. This architecture combines three system controller boards (User interface Controller, Copy Controller and Network Controller) into one. The 5665, 5675 and 5687 members of the family remain on the same multi- board controller (MBC) architecture. Existing 5632, 5638, 5645 and 5655 configurations from the WorkCentre 56xx 07 series will be capable of an optional upgrade to the WorkCentre 56xx 08 series software release by Xerox personnel. For the purposes of this document the following references will be used MBC Multi-board Controller SBC Single Board Controller WC - WorkCentre

All traditional, product specific drivers as launched with the WC 56xx 07, will function properly with the WC 56xx 08 devices. This will ensure that the transition between WC 56xx 07 and WC 56xx 08 is transparent to the user. Note: The WC 56xx 07 print driver is also compatible with WC 56xx 08. MS Server 2008 Certification is now part of the WHQL certification process and as such the WC 56xx 08 will come with MS Server 2008 certification. Auto registration of AMR (Automated Meter Reads) and ASR (Automatic Supplies Replenishment) mirrors that of the WC 76xx series and is defaulted on. WC 56xx 08 supports a new R9 Fax card which incorporates the latest modem chipset. The software on 56xx 08 will be backward compatible and work with the R8 Fax Card but is a pre-requisite for an R9 Fax card. By using an Analog Terminal Adaptor a customer would be able to fax over an IP network. For additional details please see the Customer Tip available at http://www.office.xerox.com/support/dctips/dc08cc0439.pdf. Several MIB profiles are standardized for more consistent XDM reporting across products. As well as updated remote configuration options for the new features such as IPv6, Fax forward, Dynamic SMTP, CAC SmartCard. Please see Appendix C for a complete list of MIB compliance improvements.

Updated WEB UI New EIP (Extensible Interface Platform) Solutions 1GB Ethernet Foreign Device Interface USB Printing Interface Parallel Printing Support
There have been updates made to the Web UI that will enable the new features contained within the WC 56xx 08. There are changes to the functionality of EIP, including but not limited to the ability to enable and disable Web Services and browser individually. EIP is installed by default on WC 56xx 08 and can be enabled from the Web UI. EIP on 56xx 08 also offers additional HTML based widgets that are backward compatible with your current 56xx. 32-55ppm (SBC) supports full and Half Duplex 1GB Ethernet. It can be enabled via the WEB UI or through the Local UI. The new SBC configuration machines require a new version of FDI card. Support for direct print from a laptop to a device via USB is standard on the 32-55ppm SBC configuration. MBC configuration system will continue to require the purchase of an accessory kit as per the WC 56xx 07 series. Parallel Printing is no longer supported by the 32-55 ppm SBC. MBC configuration system can support but will continue to require the purchase of an accessory kit as per the WC 56xx 07 series. This is the same kit that also enables USB printing on the WC 56xx 08 MBC. The WC 5632, 5638, 5645, 5655, 5675, 5687 08 MBC versions are compatible with the Xerox CAC solution and are enabled with a Feature Enable Key. CAC is not supported in the SBC version.

Device
The WC 56xx 08 series introduces new configurations across the range of products already available in the WC 56xx 07 series. See the Configuration section on page 3 for additional details.
Network Controller
There is no separate Network Controller for 5632, 5638, 5645 and 5655ppm SBC configurations - it is integrated into the main board in the Copy Controller tray. For the WC 56xx 08 MBC configurations the network controller is the same as WC 56xx 07 series.
Non-Connected Device
56xx 07 MBC devices have a software version of 20.113.02.xxx 56xx 08 MBC devices will have a software version of 20.120.xx.xxx. There is no non-connected version of the SBC version. (where x represents the minor version).
Information on the IPv6 Ready Logo program can be found on the InterOperability Laboratory (University of New Hampshire) web site at http://www.iol.unh.edu/services/testing/ipv6/logoholders.php.
dc08wp010
Productivity / Concurrency
The WC 56xx 08 series will achieve at least as good productivity and concurrency performance as the WC 56xx 07 series. Disabling disk encryption may improve print productivity under very large and complex job scenarios at highest resolution.
Security
There are few differences in main security options between WC 56xx 07 and WC 56xx 08 devices, however, the WC 56xx 08 MBC includes the support of the Xerox CAC solution as well as the ability to disable encryption. All devices are tested to the same security level as WC 56xx 07.
The Xerox Common Access Card solution is enabled on the WC 56xx 08 MBC devices via a Feature Enable Key.
Encryption
Encryption with the WC 56xx 07 devices was permanently on. Now with the WC 56xx 08 devices encryption is defaulted on and can be enabled and disabled from the WEB UI. Disabling encryption may improve print productivity under very large and complex job scenarios.
Printing
There are no changes to the supported PDLs from previous generations. There are no changes to the originally supported print environments. There are no changes to the basic print features. Support for parallel printing is not available on the WC 56xx 08 SBC. The WC 56xx 08 SBC offers USB printing as standard without the requirement to purchase a kit. USB printing may be enabled from the WEB UI or Local UI. USB printing is mutually exclusive to the use of Service tools, in order to use service tools USB printing muse be disabled. USB printing is also mutually exclusive with Copier Assistant in order to use copier assistant USB printing must be disabled.
Print Drivers
WC 56xx 08 devices utilize Xerox Windows Driver Platform (XWDP) print drivers. These new drivers still offer all the same features as the current generation print drivers with added capabilities. Both WC 56xx and WC 56xx 08 PostScript and PCL print drivers are WHQL certified with Vista Premium Logo and fully tested in a large variety of applications including Citrix and Print Clustered environments. The User Interface on the XWDP driver is similar to the current WC 56xx print drivers with added visual icons for bidirectional status.
Scanning Features
There are no major changes to scanning features.
dc08wp010
Fax
No major changes to Walk-up Fax, Server Fax, Internet Fax and LAN Fax. The current 56xx 07 series fax board known as R8 has been updated to the R9 fax board to replace an obsolete modem chip. Both R8 and R9 boards are compatible WC 56xx 08 devices although R9 is not compatible with 56xx 07 devices.
Copy
There are no differences in basic copy behavior.
WSD
In typical scenarios a customer wanting to connect to a new printer would have to find the IP address of that printer, download print drivers; install them; configure them; before being able to print. With the WC 56xx 08 WSD capability is implemented to provide the following capabilities: Automatically discovers the printer without having to input the IP address. Point and click to install and configure printers. Uses the latest protocols (SSL/TLS) to ensure the highest level of information security. The device provides customer more information about itself and the jobs they are printing. Note: Two specific issues have been filed with Microsoft relating to MS Vista OS implementation of the WSD feature. These are Microsoft issues and as such the 56xx 08 WSD feature is available but defaulted to off. More information can be found in Appendix D.
dc08wp010
Device Cloning
Cloning from WC 56xx 07 (MBC) to WC 56xx 08 (MBC or SBC) Cloning works as expected with the following exceptions: o o o NTP settings was not a feature in WC 56xx 07, so is not able to be cloned. Novell NetWare SAP enablement does not clone. NetBIOS over Extended User Interface (NetBEUI) is not supported in the newer products so NetBIOS can only run over TCP/IP. Therefore the "Transport" option in WC 56xx '07 is not able to be cloned to WC 56xx 08 MBC and SBC. o IPSec fields cannot be cloned.
Cloning from WC 56xx 08 MBC to WC 56xx 08 SBC All fields are cloned. Cloning from WC 56xx 08 SBC to WC 56xx 08 MBC All fields are cloned.
dc08wp010
Accounting
There are no differences in accounting functionality. There is a difference in FDI cards between the WC 56xx 08 SBC and MBC versions. The WC 56xx 08 SBC version uses the WC 7655/7665/7675 FDI card while the WC 56xx 08 MBC version uses the WC 56xx 07 FDI card.

2) Vista does not re-subscribe for events Our testers have observed that after about an hour, during load testing (when the printer is being asked to print continuously), Vista does not re-subscribe for all events. The effect of this is if the printer goes into an error state, Vista doesnt get the information that the error was cleared and the driver will not allow printing to take place. We have filed this issue with Microsoft and are waiting to hear back from them.
Because of these issues, the 56xx 08 program will have WSD defaulted to off. The feature can be turned on via the Web UI.
