Passage Comprehension (Solution) (Section 2 of 4)

Line 1. In the heart of the city of Kolkata, a man is singing, his voice strained to be heard over the roar of the traffic that encircles the maidan. A veteran singer of kathas, he is past of a vast gathering of entertainers, mountebanks, acrobats, palmists, and sundry folk who meet at the Dharamtala Mela every Sunday Line 5. afternoon. Accompanied by his dholak, the singer punctuates his story of blood and romance with pithy references to the state of the downtrodden. Listening to him intently are the labourers and vagrants who sit around him in a circle, responding to his skilful weaving of fact and fiction, myth and history Clearly, the singer knows how to tell a story as can be judged from the way he pitches his voice, varies his rhythm, breaks the narrative, then picks it up unexpectedly, only to shift the perspective of his story with a change in voice and Line 12. Transformation of character. It is a tour de force of a performance which ends after hours of non-stop delivery, whereupon 10 and 20 paise coins are collected from the crowd who part with what they can spare. The entire collection adds up to barely four or five rupees. As the crowd disperses, I talk to the performer haltingly and express my appreciation with a small donation. I learn that he is in his 70s, he lives in Shyambazar though his muluk is in Bihar, and Line 18. That he has been singing all his life. Later, as he rushes off to catch his bus, I am left thinking about him and the possibilities of his

represention. A subaltern narrative comes immediately to my mind. Just think how our moribund theatrical discourse could be energized through an analysis of his life and voice. But I also realize that this narrative would be of no use to the performer or his community. It would only contribute to my own credentials as a writer. I think more pragmatically about the resource centres to which the Line 25. performer could be linked only to confront the reality that there could be no cultural organizations for the representation of real street performer. More cynically, I am reminded of the larger circuit of festival culture into which this man could be slotted if only he could be discovered. I am left feeling oddly moved that he has not been commodified. He is free to sing his song, but he is also desperately poor. Inspite of the state, he exists. But for how long? And at what cost? 1 The singer is a native of Kolkata West Bengal Bihar Jharkhand 2 This passage is about a singers mood Indian culture in the mid 19th century poverty condition of unrecognized artists 3 According to the author, which of the following statements is/ are true about the singer? has not been commodified has not been discovered has not been slotted all the above 4 In the passage, the author is lively contemplative melancholy condescending 5 According to the passage, the author is of the opinion that Indian theatre cannot benefit from knowing more about the singer the singer cannot benefit from knowing more about Indian theatre the writer can benefit from writing about the singer the singer benefits by knowing more about the Indian theatre and the author benefits by writing about the singer 6 tour de force in the passage means forceful performance masterly creation tour of Indian culture a sum total
