ENTREPRENEURSHIP WITHOUT BORDERS REVISION SESSION

Critically discuss The entrepreneur is a person with a high need for achievement. David McClelland (2004).

Indicative answer: a. Define achievement in terms of personality, cognition and behavior (5 marks). b. Cite at least 2 examples of high achieving entrepreneurs and suggest what has been the motivation for their particular achievements to date (10 marks). c. Explain extent to which personality, culture and upbringing may lead to different levels of achievement potential (10 marks).

Critically contrast and distinguish between entrepreneurial and general management characteristics.

Indicative answer: d. Cite at least 3 entrepreneurial characteristics (i.e. Risk Taker, Curiosity, imagination, goal setting and high work ethic) and 3 management

characteristics (i.e. task focus, organizing, managing and task orientation) characteristics. (10 marks). e. Be able to explain how the two roles differ in terms of personality. (5 marks). Identify extent to which managers do a different set of activities to that of entrepreneurs. (5 marks). f. Discuss how roles can be combined (5 marks).

To what extent can Creative Problem Solving be learnt? Make reference to the course material when answering this question.

Indicative answer: g. Define creative problem solving from perspective of generating new ideas (5 marks). h. Discuss left and right brain activity, and associated tasks/behaviors (10 marks). i. Discuss mental blocks using at least 2 examples from course material (right answer, logic, rule following, practical application, play) and show where behavior change can be brought about through training, team activities and reinforcement activities (15 marks).

Compare and contrast the roles of leadership and entrepreneurship within start up organisations.

Indicative answer: j. Define leadership and entrepreneurship in terms of traits, personality and or behaviors (10 marks). k. Explain how idea generation and task delivery compete during the initial phases of a new start up organization. (5 marks) l. Discuss how management support can be augmented with radical leadership to help move organizations to higher levels of maturity (10 marks).

Critically consider the extent to which international organisations should include entrepreneurship as part of their long term business strategies.

Indicative answer: m. Explain culture using recognized theory (e.g. Edgar Scheins 4 circle theory) and suggest how this may help or hinder the process of entrepreneurship (10 marks). n. Discuss how conflicts come about between initial ideas and practical realities setting international strategies (5 marks)
