Mandatory assignment 2:
Many literary critics agree that chapter three in part two is the best in the novel and one of the best in literature. Write an article in which you agree or disagree with literary critics.

Mi percepcin a medida que envejezco es que no hay aos malos. Hay aos de fuertes aprendizajes y otros que son como un recreo, pero malos no son.1 Mamerto Menapace Monje Benedictino.

I have not got the chance to read the literary critics mentioned in the assignment yet. However, I have certain idea of why that chapter, in which the priest spend a night in jail, is considered the best in the novel, and one of the best in literature. Literature is, as we have been taught, an imitation of life2, whose value is based on the accuracy with which that depiction is made: the more accurate it is, the more connected to real life that piece of work is. That seems to have happened with the chapter in question here. In it, the priest makes his way in a crowded cell, trying to find his place in that overpopulated environment. Unit IV June 10th, 2012 attempt to make the religious lady in jail to notice it too. He recognizes himself in that lady, not as he is at that very moment, but how he used to be during his priesthood in Concepcin: so concerned about appearance and lacking of interest about subjects that really matters. That night in jail make things clearer for the priest. So, my answer to the question if I agree or disagree with the literary critics is yes. That chapter makes a perfect depiction of life as it is. Furthermore, what the author tries to make us understand might not only be applied to the time and space in which the story takes place. We, Western people mostly, are incapable to see what lies far beyond the surface, the appearance. Reading this novel made me reflect on the way I perceive my own reality and that of the other people who surround me.
