THE PRESS OF ATLANTIC CITY FIGHTS BACK AGAINST NEGATIVE PHILLY HEADLINE AC has 8 deaths this year to-date, 134 in Philly

The Press of Atlantic City is no stranger to negative community headlines, but the paper was quick to defend Atlantic City tourism in an editorial after the Philadelphia Daily News claimed the city is a Tourist Death Trap on yesterdays front page. Today, The Press of Atlantic City shot back calling out the Daily News horrific headline as misleading and over the top even for a tabloid. Newspapers, of course, have an obligation to report the news, even and especially when the news is painful and distressing. And The Press of Atlantic City did not shy away from reporting this story in the newspaper and online. But our brethren at the Daily News were over the top-- and irresponsible, the editorial stated. In comparison to other major cities in the area, Atlantic City falls short of the reported crime and homicide numbers. Philadelphia had 134 homicide reports in 2012, with 4 reported last week alone. Only 8 have been reported in 2012 for Atlantic City, including the two latest deaths. The Press of Atlantic City considers the Daily News aspersion irresponsible, especially in light of ACs recent reinvention efforts. While Mondays murders were undoubtedly horrific, the city is far from the death trap it was claimed to be. The Press editorial piece has sparked a frenzy of social media attention among industry trade site bloggers, including JimRomenesko.com. In this digital age, its important that headlines are right and reporting is accurate. If not, readers remarks will be posted on social media sites and seen around the world, said Keith Dawn, publisher for The Press of Atlantic City.
