The Moorestown Sun
The restoration committee
doesnt want it to look brand new,
but there is still much work to be
done to the historic barn at
Swedes Run Farm. However,
funds are becoming an issue, and
the group is looking to the town-
ship for help.
The farmhouse has been at the
Swedes Run Field since the 1800s,
but the historic farmhouse is not
on the states historic registry. It
has, though, become a symbol of
Moorestown Townships past.
An engineering report of the
structure showed that it was rap-
idly deteriorating. The most
pressing problem is the farm-
houses roof, according to town-
ship representatives. Its rapidly
deteriorating and either needs to
be repaired or completely re-
placed, which would most likely
be an expensive proposition.

Prior to one of the busiest
Moorestown School District
Board of Education elections
in recent memory, the BOE has
to decide on a replacement for
one of its own who tendered
her resignation.
The board will have to re-
place Linda Alexandroff after
the BOE member resigned.
More change might be coming
to the BOE in November, as
eight candidates have regis-
tered to run in the board of ed-
ucation election, according to
the Burlington County web-
site.
Alexandroff submitted a
resignation letter to the dis-
trict on June 25, effectively
ending her run on the board
that had lasted for the past
nine-and-a-half years. Her seat
on the board was going to ex-
pire at the end of 2012. She had
not registered to run for re-
election in the 2012 elections.

Moorestown

obtained and staged
the necessary
material (sand,

proceeded to patch

Mosquito traps placed in the
vicinity of sewage treatment
plants in Moorestown and Mount
Holly have turned up positive
samples of West Nile Virus, ac-
cording to the Burlington County
Mosquito Division.
As a result, the division treated
adult mosquitoes on Thursday,
July 5.
The positive samples brought
the total of West Nile mosquitoes
trapped this season up to three.
The first was identified in late
May in Pemberton Township.
Areas within approximately
one-half mile of each sewerage
plant were treated. A truck-
mounted sprayer applied pesti-
cides in a mist form.
The Mount Holly plant is locat-
ed at 300 Rancocas Road, in close
proximity to the Mount Holly By-
pass. The Moorestown sewerage
plant is located at 250 Pine Street.
The Mosquito Division rou-
tinely places traps throughout the
County during the warm weather
season, to identify the presence of
mosquitoes carrying West Nile
Virus, Eastern Equine Encephali-
tis, and St. Louis Encephalitis.
Residents are reminded to take
precautions against mosquito
bites by using repellent, wearing
long sleeves and long pants, and
by trying to limit outdoor activity
when mosquitoes are most active,
during dawn and dusk.
Residents should also clean or
remove any items on their per-
sonal property that can collect
rain or sprinkler water and serve
as a breeding ground for mosqui-
toes, such as clogged gutters, flow-
erpots, bottle caps or old car tires.
They should also completely
change water in birdbaths at least
once a week and should repair
window and door screens.

district as her reason for leaving.
It has been my pleasure to
serve the community, the district,
parents, staff and especially the
children as a member of the
board. Over the years, I have de-
voted countless hours to support
the district, its goals and objec-
tives. My position on the board
has allowed me to work, in the
past and the present, with many
fine educators, support staff, ad-
ministrators and of course in-
volved parents, she wrote in her
statement. I have enjoyed each
connection I made and will miss
the camaraderie afforded to me
by the many board members who
have served with me over the past
years. The decision to leave now
is the result of my family moving
to a new home in an adjacent
community.
The BOE is seeking interested

months of Alexandroff s seat. Ap-
plicants must submit a resume
and letter of intent to the
Moorestown Township Board of

e sat there, with a blank face,
as he heard he was guilty on
45 of 48 charges of sexual
abuse of minors. And its likely Jerry
Sandusky, the former Penn State assis-
tant football coach who went so far as
to start a charity for neglected chil-
dren, will never see the light of day
again once hes sentenced in Septem-
ber.
And when that sentence comes
down, is there any doubt it will be just?
Regardless of what the sentence is,
the entire Sandusky ordeal is a re-
minder of just how important it is for
people to speak up on the matter of
sexual abuse.
If youre a witness to such an atroci-
ty, you must speak up and let the au-
thorities know.
If you are a family member of an
abuser or of someone who has been
abused you must let the authorities
know. And if youre a victim, as
painful as it might seem, you must
speak up and you must let the author-
ities know. For if weve learned any-
thing from this case, its just how im-
portant one voice could be if its used
wisely. If someone anyone had spo-
ken up in the 1990s, its possible others
could have been spared from this mon-
ster and his sickening abuse.
And, weve also learned, quite clear-
ly, that as painful as it is for those who
were abused to speak up, doing so
could very well lead to justice being
served and it could lead to sexual
predators being stopped in their
tracks.
All it takes is one conversation: to a
loved one, to a teacher, to a police offi-
cer. And the rest will be taken care of,
with luck, swiftly and justly. Sandusky
is where he belongs behind bars. And
if one just one more predator can be
taken off the streets because someone,
somewhere speaks up after thinking of
this case, then it will be all worth it in
the end.
No one, ever, should have to go
through what those kids went through.
Ever again.

Some people think Marc Dalio is a beast.
Actually the director for the 2012
MoorArts summer theater production is a
pretty nice guy. But he heard plenty of ap-
plause when he starred as the Beast and
Gaston in the Broadway National Tour of
Disneys Beauty and the Beast. Dalios
acting credits loom large and include a se-
ries of leading roles yet he is equally ac-
complished working behind the scenes. His
directorial resume is studded with familiar
favorites like South Pacific, Guys and
Dolls and Godspell, but he also makes a
point to get involved with shows that offer
something fresh and challenging.
It was the opportunity to direct The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
that brought Dalio to Moorestown this
summer.
Spelling Bee is a favorite among the-
ater insiders. Known for its brisk wit as
well as its empathy and heart, the show fo-
cuses on a group of brainy middle-school
misfits (played by young adults), each
vying to emerge as the winner of the coun-
ty spelling competition. The characters be-
come more endearing as their personali-
ties and back stories are revealed. As they
grapple with adolescent angst, overbearing
parents, and the rules of the game, they
leave the bee with some life lessons under
their belts, making the show not only
funny, but wise.
Dalios vision for the MoorArts produc-
tion includes the audience participation
and ad lib interjections by the players that
helped make the musical a tony winning
hit. To draw viewers into the excitement,
all seating for the show will be on the stage
surrounding the action. In advance of each
performance, four audience members will
be selected to be contestants in the bee.
The spontaneity of the characters interact-
ing with the audience recruits makes each
show unique.
The cast hails from across South Jersey
and Philadelphia. Moorestown veteran
players Ryan Wyrofsky and John Comegno
are joined by the talented team of Jarad
Benn, Denise Augustyn, Kyrus Keenan
Westcott, Emily McHale, Anthony Ieradi,
Olivia Manlove, and Kristen Burke. As
with every MoorArts production, the
instrumental music for the show will be
live.
Performances are July 13 to 15, 18, 20 and
21 on the stage of the Moorestown High
School auditorium. The shows begin at 8
p.m. each night, and there is also a matinee
on Sunday, July 15 at 3 p.m. Tickets are
available online at www.moorarts.org.
Spelling Bee is recommended for audi-
ences over the age of 12.
MoorArts is a non-profit organization
dedicated to promoting the arts in
Moorestown schools and throughout the
community. All proceeds from the show
support student scholarships and teacher
grants in the arts.

The committee has successful-
ly raised enough money to install
new rafters, related roof eves, and
gable ends. The roofing shingles
were installed recently, said
David Schill, a member of the
restoration committee. In other
words, everything above the
stonewalls is finished in the barn,
he said.
So the Swedes Run Barn
restoration committee decided to
take the next step, improving the
stone walls. Moorestown resident
and long-time mason George
Bobb stepped forward to offer his
services in this department.
George evaluated the existing
condition of not only the stones
that make up the walls, but the
mortar that keeps the stones in
place, Schill wrote in an update
to The Sun. Upon his advice, and
the guidance of project architect,
Moorestowns Kim Bunn, the
remedy agreed upon was to dig
out decayed mortar and repack
the joints with new material that
is better than the original mortar.
This method will result in joints
that will last much longer than
what was done years ago and has
since turned to sand.
During the week of April 30 to
May 4, Bobb and part-time tug-
boat captain Bobby Hartzel ob-
tained and staged the necessary
material (sand, mortar, water)
and proceeded to patch the build-
ings interior. Aided part time by
another Moorestown resident
and archeologist Jack Cresson,
the two took turns mixing the ma-
terial so Bobb could stay busy
packing the joints.
But of course, all of this takes
money, and the committee doesnt
have enough to complete the proj-
ect.
Mayor John Button said no for-
mal request from the committee
has been made to council to use
monies from the Open Space,
Recreation, Farmland and Histor-
ical Preservation Fund, but hed
be willing to listen.
Certainly, I support the uti-
lization of the Open Space, Recre-
ation, Farmland and Historical
Preservation Fund for all its au-
thorized uses and this appears to
me to be one. We are awaiting a
formal request from them for
funding, and, if the request is in
the ballpark that I have been led
to believe it will be, I will be in
favor of utilizing the fund for this
purpose, Button wrote in a state-
ment.
The committee doesnt want
the barn to look brand new,
Schill said. With that in mind, he
said the committee is dedicated to
bringing back to life one of the
oldest structures in town.
The committee would love to
say that the work involved costs
nothing. However, anyone who
has had work done on their own
house knows better, Schill said.
We need money to finish this job
and pay the bills. Were asking
you to send a check; any amount
will do, to help us pay for saving
this wonderful old building. If we
dont save our past, who will?
If youre interested in donating
money to the cause, please send a
check to the Moorestown Histori-
cal Society, c/o Julie Maravich,
660 Chester Ave., Moorestown,
N.J. 08057 and mark in the memo

The resurfacing of a 1.2-mile
stretch of Kings Highway in
Moorestown from Lenola Road to
Camden Avenue began on Mon-
day, July 9.
The milling and overlay con-
struction is expected to take two
weeks to complete. Traffic will be
maintained with one lane alter-
nating. Motorists can expect de-
lays and are encouraged to find
alternative routes during con-
struction. American Asphalt Co.,
Inc. Jersey Construction, Inc. a
joint venture of West
Collingswood has been contract-
ed to perform the construction as
part of the countys 2011 State
Funded Overlay Program.
This is one of 16 roads to be
resurfaced in the program that
will overlay a total 23.7 miles of
county roads in16 municipalities
at a cost of $7.2 million.
It is expected that 68,000 tons of
asphalt will be needed to com-
plete all construction scheduled
for the program.
The county highway network
includes 508.4 miles of county
roads, 364 bridges, 700 culverts,
more than 243 traffic control de-
vices and 17,000 signs.

The Rotary Club of
Moorestown has awarded a total
of $22,000 in college scholarships
to 11 Moorestown High School
students. The students were hon-
ored during the Rotary Clubs
lunch meeting on June 14, where
Rotarians heard from the stu-
dents about their college of
choice and their majors.
They were each given $2,000.
Rotarians enjoyed the opportuni-
ty to give happy dollars for
those colleges where they them-
selves had attended.
The scholarship recipients
were selected on the basis of
scholastic achievement, extracur-
ricular activities and financial
need, said Jeremy Countess who
serves as chair to the scholarship
selection committee.
In 49 years of scholarship giv-
ing, the Rotary Club of
Moorestown has awarded $509,000
to promising and deserving high
school seniors. Rotarians raise
funds for the scholarships
through community-services
projects such as the Rotary Scott
Coffee 8K Memorial Run, held the
first Saturday in June; the Rotary
pancake breakfast held in early
March; and the travel adventure
series held throughout the year.
Please check out

tary.org (international) for local
events. Business owners and em-
ployees interested in community
service and fellowship are wel-
come to join us on Thursdays at
