Response Control of the Wind Excited 76-Storey Benchmark Building

Saurabh D Borkar [MIS NO: 121019018] ABSTRACT

In the recent past, trend has been shifted towards construction of tall and slender buildings to mitigate the scarcity of land in the busy areas. Slender structures are likely to be sensitive to dynamic response in line with the wind direction as a consequence of turbulence buffeting. Transverse or cross-wind response is more likely to arise from vortex shedding or galloping but may also result from excitation by turbulence buffeting. Wind induced responses can be suppressed by various ways like i) Aerodynamic Means i.e. Corner Cutting, Corner Chamfering, Opening Holes, Changing Sectional Shapes. ii) Structural Design i.e. increases in mass and stiffness. iii) Auxiliary Damping Devices i.e. active, semi active, passive controllers. For the dissertation work the building considered is a proposed 76-story concrete office tower in Melbourne, Australia. It is a slender building, 306.1 m tall, with a height to width ratio of 7.3, Hence, it is wind sensitive. The enhancement in the performance of the benchmark building will be studied under across wind loads. To improve structural design reliability and to control the responses it is proposed to use auxiliary damping devices. The performances of different control strategies based on the same criteria, using the same structural model, under the same wind loads will be evaluated. High power and huge actuators are required for active control systems. Especially for wind excited tall structures, maintaining continuous supply of power to active control systems is practically not viable. Thus, passive and semi-active control strategies will be studied for the Benchmark Building. The optimum number and the location of dampers will be decided by the optimization procedure. Optimal damper location is the storey at which relevant response quantities i.e. inter storey velocity and/or displacement, depending on the forcedeformation characteristic of the damper under consideration, reach a maximum during the entire excitation period. This work is expected to accelerate the implementation of dampers to mitigate the vibration of wind excited tall and slender buildings.
