TECHNICAL TEXTILE IN MARINE

INTRODUCTION
Technical
textiles are manufactured primarily for their performance and functional properties rather then aesthetic or decorative purpose. Over all growth rates of Technical Textiles in the world are about 4.0%per annum but the apparel and home textiles are at the rate of 1.0%.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF TECHNICAL TEXTILE

Agro textile Construction Textile Geo textile Medical textile Protective textiles Sport Textile Marine textile

Marine Textile
Textile has been used in the marine for
different purposes like rear curtains, inflatable boats, Micro-perforated mesh, fishing nets & ropes. Marine fabrics are woven fabrics and thereby do not trap heat and moisture. It does not mildew thereby retains the fabric look for a long period of time.

TEST FOR MARINE TEXTILE

Water repellency Resistance to salt water Mildew resistance Bursting strength of fabric Tearing strength of fabric Colour fastness to light & water

DIFFERENT MARERIALS USED IN MARINE

Hypalon fabric Polyvinyl chloride Polyester Fabric with PVC coating

Hypalon fabric
Made
by the
Achilles Corporation in Japan. Best material for the manufacture of inflatable boats.

Hypalon fabric
. Outside Hypalon layer Weather resistance (fading and ageing) Chemical resistance Abrasion resistance Layer of Neoprene in between the Hypalon and textile Inside Neoprene sheets that give: High gluability and reliable adhesion Air tightness (no air in the high textile) High textile that gives: Basic mechanical properties (tensile and tear strengths)

Advantages

Very strong and puncture resistant Very resistant to sunlight and chemicals Can be inflated at quite high air pressures for good rigidity Extremely durable & long-lasting Capable of being used in the roughest white water or handling large outboard motors

Disadvantages

Very expensive material Very expensive to manufacture Cannot be welded When glued in an environment where the temperature and humidity are not controlled, the seams can be weakened and become defective When welded glued in an environment where there is dust or dirt, the seams can be weakened and become defective.

Polyvinyl chloride inflatables It is generally used on the least expensive

This type of material is almost always die-electrically welded.

Advantages:

Extremely economical as a material Extremely fast and economical manufacturing process Equal tear strength in both directions, making long tears less likely More abrasion resistant because it is a solid material.

Disadvantages:
less durable when using the nylon/polyester sewn fabrics and &
unsupported PVC Can be quite expensive when using best materials (i.e. 1000+ denier polyester with urethane bladders) Can be prone to sewing problems

Polyester Fabric with PVC coating

This type of material has a polyester fabric with an outside
PVC coating. Most widely used material for supported fabric because of its relatively economical material and production cost. The quality of polyester fabric depends greatly on the quality of the PVC coating used and whether is calendered or laminated. It also has a reputation of being more susceptible to UV radiation, salt water & chemicals.

Polyester Fabric with PVC coating

Advantages: Flexible production system can be either welded or glued. Economical hull material far less expensive than hypalon

nylon or hypalon polyester. Very strong and puncture resistant. Can be inflated at quite high air pressures for good rigidity. Extremely durable & long-lasting. Capable of being used in the roughest white water or handling large outboard motors.

Polyester Fabric with PVC coating

Disadvantages:

When welded, it can be, if not done properly, can be

subject to delamination of the seam. When glued in an environment where the temperature and humidity are not controlled, the seams can be weakened in spots and become defective. When welded or glued in an environment where there is dust or dirt, the seams can be weakened and become defective. Less able to take a motor because of lack or rigidity.

APPLICATION OF TEXTILE IN MARINE

Boat Cover Micro-Perforated Mesh Marine Ropes Fishing nets

Boat Cover
Marine fabrics have been
carefully selected to cover all marine purposes and applications. Mariners are all water proof fabrics making them suitable for marine canopies. Marine fabrics have been tested to required standards and can be used with confidence for any marine covers

Features Boat Cover

UV stabilized Mildew resistant High tear and tensile strength High resistance to soiling Colour Fast Abrasion resistant Excellent strength to weight ratio

Micro-Perforated Mesh
Micro-perforated mesh specifically designed to reduce glare
and control solar transmission providing visual and thermal comfort.

FEATURES

Temperature control Up to 90% UVR block High strength to weight ratio Abrasion resistant

Marine Ropes
Nylon ropes Polyester ropes Polypropylene

Fishing nets
Fishing nets are meshes usually formed by knotting a
relatively thin thread. Modern nets are usually made of artificial polyamides like nylon. The different types of fishing nets are Hand net, Cast net, Chinese nets, Gillnet, Driftnet, Ghost net etc

CONCULSION
The technical textile for marine market is respective

to innovative new products. The market is quite small but exhibits moderately strong growth and produces are generally of high unit values. It is a market that offers opportunity.
