GUMBORO DISEASE
Gumboro is a highly contagious Immuno-supressive Viral Disease of chicken Causal Agent: Gumboro Virus
Specific Factor: Most Severe : 3-6 Week of age But Leghorn Chicken: Up to 18 week of age Economic Impact:
1. Direct mortality that can reach levels in excess of 40%, 2. Secondary infections, due to a suboptimal immune system.
MICROBIOLOGY
Small, non-enveloped double stranded RNA virus.
PATHOGENESIS
Gumboro No Antibody
TRANSMISSION
Gumboro virus not transmitted vertically.
Virus can persists in the environment of the poultry shed thus infections are carried over from one cycle to the next. Mealworm could act as a vector carrying Gumboro Virus from one cycle to the next. Horizontal transmission through infected faeces, contaminated equipment (especially footwear) or other organic material.
