Pros and Cons of ISP Business

Accessing ISPs
Consumers can access their ISPs through different means such as: Dial-up connection Broadband technologies GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) & 3G (Third Generation mobile telecommunication) services for mobile access

Dial-up Connection
Dial-up access is a form of Internet access via

telephone line. The client uses a modem connected to a computer and a telephone line to dial into an ISP's node to establish a modem to modem link, which is then routed to the internet. Dial-up connection is the slowest internet connection, it is 17-53 times slower than broadband connection. It is not possible to make or receive phone calls when connected to the Internet.

Broadband Technologies
Broadband technology refers to the means by which access can be made faster with greater bandwidth. There are several such technologies, of which the main types are : Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) Cable Modems Other means

DSL
Limitations of cable infrastructure

High-bandwidth Internet access over existing

phone wiring Most commonly used means of broadband technology It modulates binary data into sonic frequencies above 20 kHz This enables user to make or receive calls when connected to Internet without interference Speeds upto 6 mbps can be delivered

Cable Modems
High speed Internet access over cable modems

Uses the Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) or the all-

coaxial infrastructure of the local cable provider Speeds range from 500kbps to 30mbps This bandwidth satisfies the current scale requirement though it is expected to face scalability issues in future

Other Broadband Technologies

These include: Passive Optical Networks (PON) Wireless LAN and LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Other connection means include connection via satellite, electric power lines etc.

The Future of ISPs?

Depends on competitive forces

Increasing demand
ISPs will become increasingly important as more

information is communicated by the Internet Increasing research in ISP sciences An interesting new development is the introduction of new domain names. Instead of the traditional .com, .org and .net there is now .biz and .info.
