INTRODUCTION
Number Portability will allow subscribers to change their service provider while retaining their old mobile number. Portability benefits to subscribers and increases the level of competition between service providers, rewarding service providers with the best customer service, network coverage, and service quality.

Number Portability: Definition

NP refers to the ability of end users to retain
their telephone number when they change their network operator service provider, their location, or their service.

Types
There are three basic types of mobile number portability: Service operator Portability Location Portability Service Portability

Service operator portability

It refers to the ability of an end user to retain the same mobile number when changing from one type of service to another without necessarily changing their operator. (e.g., from old mobile service to ISDN)

Location portability
It refers to the ability of an end user to retain the same mobile number when changing from one physical location to another without necessarily changing their operator

Operator portability service

It refers to the ability of an end user to retain the same number when changing from one operator to another. It is also referred to as service provider number portability and is further divided into:
geographic number portability for all fixed public telephone network and integrated services digital network (ISDN) subscribers at a specific location ; non-geographic number portability or NGNP for fixed numbers at any location ; mobile number portability or MNP.

Local Service Management System

The Local Service Management System (LSMS) is a fault-tolerant hardware and software platform that contains database with routing information to ported telephone numbers. The primary functions of the LSMS are subscription management, network data management, service provider data management, error processing and notification, transaction event logging and reporting, transmission of activation/deactivation events to the network elements, and audits

Number Portability Database

The Number Portability Database (NPDB) contains all ported numbers within a ported domain as well as routing info. necessary to support number portability. Its function is to provide the association between the called party and the carrier LRN, identifying the switch to which the call should be routed.

Working of MNP
All Cell phones have special codes. These codes identify the phone, the phones owner, & the service provider. Cell phones use high frequency radio signals to communicate with cell towers located throughout the calling area. These phones operate in the frequency range of 806-890 MHz.

Conclusion
MNP does not generate churn, it only removes one barrier from the way of free. As such, it brings challenges and opportunities for old and new telecommunications providers. To be successful in the competitive telecommunications environment, carriers have to carefully analyze their network and administrative infrastructures, select the best MNP solution for their needs and exploit the benefits of increased customer choice that NP provides.

ADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO USERS: Will not have to change the number. Save money by having the best plan you like. ADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO OPERATORS: Savings in expenses for reserving a number-series. Healthy competition and an opportunity to explore more services/feature ADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO OPERATORS:

Savings in expenses for reserving a number-series.

Healthy competition and an opportunity to explore more services/feature

DISADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO USERS: Process takes 6-7 days.

Users lose their old prepaid balance after porting.

DISADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO OPERATORS: Technology change. More competition with other companies. DISADVANTAGES OF MNP IN INDIA TO GOVERNMENT: More competition to BSNL. Loss due to dropdown in number of mobile numbers.

Future
The future seems to be bright for this technology in India. The reason for being so is that currently, according to the government statistics, about 68% of all mobile customers change their mobile phone number at least once in a year. Indian users would have a MNP like location portability and Service portability in future. When Mobile Number Portability in India is complete, the number will drop significantly and only those people will change the numbers who really want to disconnect the mobile service or want to become anonymous again.

The MNP process is relatively new to India but holds lots of scope. With the revolution of mobile telephony sector in India, the subscriber base has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade It can also lead to lots of errors like customer dissatisfaction, misalignment between the old and new service operator, loss of revenue and negative publicity. Hence proper infrastructure needs to be in place for it starts in India.
