INTRODUCTION
Why do we use fuel cell? What is a fuel cell? Main types of fuel cells

Why we use fuel cell?

To produce high, efficient power without damaging our environment. It directly converts chemical energy in the form of electrical. For long duration space programs. In place of solar energy during eclipses.

What is a fuel cell?

An electrochemical device that converting chemical energy to elec. energy. It is a combination of a fuel with an oxidizer to produce electrical power. It does not require charging.

A TYPICAL FUEL CELL

Main types of fuel cell

Alkaline hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell Propane-oxygen fuel cell Methyl alcohol-oxygen fuel cell Exchange membrane fuel cell Solid oxide fuel cell Molten carbonate fuel cell

How ALK HYDROGEN F-CELL works

Consists two electrodes with Alk. KOH as electrolyte. Anode : H2(g) 2H+ +2e Cathode: 2H++1/2O2 +2e-H2O Cell reaction:H2+1/2O2 H2O Only by product is water

A fuel cell

Advantage of it in space application

Highly efficient Eco-friendly By product water can be used for drinking purpose long life Renewal energy resource No toxic product

Its energy density is >500w-hr/kg. Hydrogen has 52 times greater buoyancy than gasoline. Its diffusion coeff. Is 12.2 times greater than gasoline.

Where did fuel cell come from?

1802 - Sir Humphrey Davy created a simple fuel cell (C | H2O, HNO3| O2 | C) fuel cell was build in 1839 by Sir William Grove. 1932 J.T.Bacon developed 1st practical fuel cell As a practical power generator, it was first adopted by NASA in the 1960s.

What is going on in ISRO

Fast track work is going on for development of better fuel cells. A Fuel cell has recently been developed for use in automobiles.

Future expectations
To make good fuel cells for futures manned space programs. To increase its efficiency. To reduce cost. To develop fuel cells which can take ISRO far ahead than others in this field.
