ENERGY GENERATION FROM WASTEWATER AND MSW

Mankind facing three major problems:

Waste disposal

Renewable energy source

Climate change

One solution

Recycling and production of energy from waste and waste water

Composition of waste water and waste

Wastewater Largely uncharacterized and undefined mixture of compounds, including many organics, likely to range from small, simple chains through to more complex molecules Municipal solid waste (MSW) Household waste combined with a minor portion of commercial waste. It contains a high proportion of biomass materials such as paper/cardboard, wood, and food.

Energy and water are interdependent

Energy and power production require water.
Water production processing, distribution & end use require energy.

Energy from wastewater can be generated by:

digester gas (biogas)

biomass (biosolids)

biosolids products used by other entities

plant influent or effluent

size of constituents Quality of the waste Parameters affecting Energy Recovery Quantity of waste moisture content density

Method of generating energy from waste and waste water

Biochemical conversion
Anaerobic

digestion

Thermo-chemical conversion
Incineration Pyrolysis/

gasification

Anaerobic digestion

Process Advantage

Less energy requirement Energy generation in the form of methane gas Solids content of sludge gets reduced. Energy costs involved in transport is reduced. The quality of the digested sludge (compost) is better Its totally enclosed system prevents escape of polluted air to atmosphere. Less nutrients (N & P) requirement reduction in CO2 emission

Incineration

Pyrolysis/ Gasification

EfW Benefits

Local provides sustainable waste disposal National Reduces dependence of fossil fuel by reliably generating clean, renewable energy

Global Helps fight Global Warming by reducing landfill methane gas emissions

New technology for energy generation from waste and wastewater

MICROBIAL FUEL CELL

Employ microbes to generate electricity from biochemical energy produced during metabolism of organic substrate.

Basis of MFC
The generation of current, and the potential
difference between the cathode and the anode

chambers, creates the basis of the MFC.

Benefits of MFC

clean, safe, quiet performance; high energy efficiency; low emissions; and ease in operating.

The anaerobic microbes required for MFCs are commonly found in wastewater, so influent wastewater could act as both a substrate and a source of microorganisms.

ITS NOT WASTE IF IT IS ENERGY
