WHY YOUNG PEOPLE DRINK?


Many young people struggle with drinking. Alcohol is a part of young peoples lives, whether or not an individual young person drinks. Many young people have drunk, or currently drink, alcohol.
Almost every young person has friends or peers who drink alcohol, and many also have parents or other family members who drink. Partying, drinking socially with other young people, is considered cool. The media creates a lot of images of young people drinking and promotes drinking as being fun and popular.

PERSONAL AND HEALTH ISSUES


One out of every ten adults has a serious problem with alcohol.
Alcoholism addiction and their effect is the third highest cause of death of people of all ages The leading cause of death for people 35 and under is accidents. The most common thread that factors into accidental death, is the presence of alcohol in the system

A minimum of 1 in 20 births in countries like USA, Australia, whole Europe and others has been severely impacted by the presence of alcohol in mother or father at the time of conception, gestation or delivery

SHORT TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLISM Slower Reaction Times/Reflexes Heavy Sweating Blurry Vision Nausea And Vomiting Lowered Reasoning Ability Poor Motor Coordination Slower Heart Rate/Breathing Rate Increased Blood Pressure Anxiety/Restlessness Lower Inhibition

LONG TERM EFFECTS OF ALCOHOLISM

Nervous System Muscles Lungs Liver Brain Heart Esophagus/Stomach

EFFECT ON FAMILY
Children of alcoholics have common symptoms such as:Low self esteem Loneliness Guilt Feelings of helplessness Fears of abandonment Chronic depression. High levels of tension and stress.

Spouse of alcoholics have similar symptoms like:Feelings of hatred Self pity Avoidance of social contacts. May suffer exhaustion. Has to perform roles of both parents Financial difficulties .

EFFECT OF ALCOHOLISM ON SOCIETY

The following are caused by alcoholism: Traffic accidents :50% Homicides :67% Forceful rape :40% Suicide :35% Unemployment in society Lower performance Higher employee turnover Low productivity

PREVENTIONS
Preventive programs for young people provided by state, municipal and non-governmental organizations
Peer-to-peer education (including on alcohol prevention) Work of so called Health Councils in the schools aimed to share responsibility for planning and implementing of preventive work in the schools among teachers, school psychologists, social workers, parents.

Spread awareness through media Spread awareness at school level. Rehabilitation centers for addicts. Strict laws.
