Math Fair 2011

Year 10 Extension

What is the Math Fair?

It

is an exhibition of projects presented by Year 10 students to the rest of the school. You will be in pairs for this project and you have a free choice on what the project is about. BUT it must contain mathematical work appropriate to your level or above EXTENSION or above.

Who takes part?

All

of Year 10 are to do this project in pairs. The Mathematics teachers jointly mark each project which should be presented to them by you. Other students and teachers are invited to come to the Fair and to ask you questions about your project.

Why are we doing this?

Planning,

investigating, making findings and judgments, proving statements and presenting your work are all key skills in life. They are particularly useful in Mathematics and assessed at IGCSE and IB level. You are doing this to prepare you for such assessment.

Where will it be held?

In

the hall.

When will it be?

The

Math Fair will be st held on Thursday 21 April 2011 between Periods 1 and 5.

How do I start?

Firstly you will either be paired by your teacher or given a choice of who you work with. The next stage is for each pair to discuss ideas and come up with an outline plan of what your project is about. IT MUST HAVE APPROPRIATE MATHEMATICAL CONTENT AT EXTENSION LEVEL AND ABOVE. You then submit to your teacher a proposal form which will either be accepted or declined. This process needs to be completed with all project ideas accepted by Friday 25th March 2011. If you are struggling for ideas, start by thinking what areas of Mathematics you are both good at or interest you, then think how you could apply that to a situation.

What happens next?

You

will be given a short amount of lesson time to work on this project. Most of the time needs to be spent out of lessons on this. You need to eventually have the project presentation ready for the Fair. You may also use various technological equipment if you wish.

How is it marked?
The

project is marked by your teachers (judges) in the following sections: Mathematical Content Diagrams Explanations Organisation Conclusions Extension Presentation Question/Answer Session with Judge

Mathematical Content

Diagrams

Explanations

Organisation Extension Q&A Session

Presentation

The total mark is 50.

You do not have to do a poster. You may present your project in any way you wish. However if you are struggling Do a poster!

How will this affect my grade?

Projects

are worth 20% of your overall grade for the year. This is project 3 out of 3. Therefore it is worth 6.66..% of your total grade.

Plagiarism
This

is very important to note;

You cannot just reproduce things from websites/books etc pretending it is your own work. It is very obvious when this is done and your teachers are excellent at recognising when work is not your own. AVOID USING THE INTERNET AT ALL. ALL WORK DONE MUST BE YOUR OWN!

Extra resources
For

details of the Extension curriculum go to www.leafmaths.wikispaces.com/year10 you have no ideas by 25th March then your teacher will give you a project to work on. Please try and avoid this if you can.

What happens now?

Get

into pairs. Start thinking about what you want to do and how you are going to go about it. Fill in the Proposal Form which will be given to you in the next few weeks. Remember Most of this is to be done by YOU outside of lesson time so do not rely on your teacher to get you through this!
