ISO 9000 Quality management

ISO 9000 is the generic name given to a family of international standards developed to provide a framework around which a quality management system can effectively be implemented. These standards were developed to help companies effectively document the elements they need to maintain an efficient quality system. They are not specific to any one industry. ISO 9000 is maintained by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and is administered by accreditation and certification bodies. The standards are revised every few years to keep them up-to-date.

Principles of ISO 9000 Quality management

The ISO 9000 quality management standards depend on following principles Customer focus
Organizations depend on their customers and therefore should understand current and future customer needs, should meet customer requirements andstrive to exceed customer expectations.

Leadership
Leaders establish unity of purpose and direction of the organization. They should create and maintain the internal environment in which people can become fully involved in achieving the organizations objectives.

Involvement of people
People at all levels are the essence of an organization and their full involvement enables their abilities to be used for the organizations benefit.

Principles of ISO 9000 Quality management contd...

Process approach
A desired result is achieved more efficiently when activities and related resources are managed as a process.

System approach to management

Identifying, understanding and managing interrelated processes as a system contributes to the organizations effectiveness and efficiency in achieving its objectives.

Principles of ISO 9000 Quality management contd...

Continual improvement
Continual improvement of the organizations overall performance should be a permanent objective of the organization.

Factual approach to decision making

Effective decisions are based on the analysis of data and information

Mutually beneficial supplier relationships

An organization and its suppliers are interdependent and a mutually beneficial relationship enhances the ability of both to create value

Benefits of ISO 9000

ISO-9000 forces an organization to focus on "how they do business". Each procedure and work instruction must be documented and thus, becomes the springboard for Continuous Improvement. Employee morale is increased as they are asked to take control of their processes and document their work processes. Customer satisfaction, and more importantly customer loyalty, grows. As a company transforms from a reactive organization to a pro-active, preventative organization, it becomes a company people want to do business with.

Benefits of ISO 9000 contd

Improved profit levels result as productivity improves and rework costs are reduced. Fosters the understanding that quality, in and of itself, is not limited to a quality department but is everyone's responsibility. Improved communications both internally and externally which improves quality, efficiency, on time delivery and customer/supplier relations. Reduced problems resulting from increased employee participation, involvement, awareness and systematic employee training.

ISO 9001
ISO 9001 is used when an organization is seeking to establish a quality management system that provides confidence in its ability to provide products that fulfil customer needs and expectations.

The standard recognizes that the term product applies to services, processed material, hardware and software intended for the customer.

There are five sections in the standard that specify activities that need to be considered when it is implemented in the system: Overall requirements for the quality management system and documentation

Management responsibility, focus, policy, planning and objectives

Resource management and allocation

Product realization and process management, and

Measurement, monitoring, analysis and improvement.

ISO 9004
ISO 9004 is used to extend the benefits obtained from ISO 9001 to all parties that are interested in or affected by operations. Interested parties include organisations employees, owners, suppliers, partners and society in general. ISO 9004 gives guidance on a wider range of objectives of a quality management system than does ISO 9001, particularly in managing for the long-term success of an organization. ISO 9004 is recommended as a guide for organizations whose top management wishes to extend the benefits of ISO 9001 in pursuit of systematic and continual improvement of the organizations overall performance.
