An object in motion changes position over a specific time frame. The motion of an object can be described and predicted. To completely describe that change, a reference point, how far, what direction and what amount of time is needed.

Terms to describe motion Distance Displacement Speed Velocity Acceleration

Values that are used to describe motion terms can be characterize As two different types of quantities: scalar or vector.

Scalar quantities

are values that only have a size or magnitude. They tell you how much.

Vector quantities

are values that have both size/magnitude and direction. They tell you how much and in which direction.

Distance is the total

Displacement measures
the change in position of an object including the direction. To get displacement you must find the difference in the position of the starting and ending points including direction. Vector quantity

amount of movement from starting to ending point. To get the distance you must find how far you moved to get from start to finish. Scalar quantity

Speed is the rate of

change of position
S= d/t where S=speed, d=distance, t=time Speed will only have a magnitude and is a scalar quantity.

Velocity is the rate

of change of displacement.
V= disp/t where v= velocity, disp=displacement and t = time. Velocity will have both a magnitude and direction and is thus a vector quantity.

velocity. Speeding up, slowing down, and turning are all forms of acceleration. Ave acceleration is equal to the change in velocity over time a= Dn/t= (n2-n1)/t; a=ave acceleration, v=velocity and t = time Acceleration is a vector quantity.

Acceleration is the rate of change of

A force is a push or a pull The SI unit for force is Newton When a force is applied to an object, the objects motion changes.

The total of all forces acting on an object is the net force. Balanced forces occur when the forces act in a way to cancel each other out so that the net force is equal to zero. When the forces act in a way that they dont cancel each other, the forces are unbalanced forces and the object moves in the direction of the net force.

Friction is a

contact force that opposes motion when two objects touch.

There are static and kinetic friction.

Air resistance is the

force that opposes the motion of objects through the air. The amount of air resistance acting on the object depends on the size, shape, and speed of the object.

Gravity is a

universal force of attraction between all matter as a result of its mass. Weight is the measure of the gravitational force on an objects mass.

Uniform Motion The type of motion in which a body moves or covers equal distance equal t.ime

Non-Uniform Motion The type of motion in which a body covers unequal distance in equal time.
