Briefly explain 6 criteria taken into consideration when deciding teaching methods and technique.

To relate with the Lesson Subject To relate with the Lesson Objective E.g. pratical method for psychomotor objective To relate with Pupils' Abilities E.g. grouping method for heterogenous pupils

E.g. Science, methods used would be inquirydiscovery, demonstration etc

To relate with Teaching Approaches

To relate with Teaching Strategies E.g. expository and demonstration method for teacher-centred strategy

E.g. master learning for integrative approach

To relate with the Type of Teaching and Learning Activity E.g. questioning techinique for consolidation activity

Story Telling
Use an interesting and suitable story. A teacher memorises the important parts & provide teaching aids (words, dolls, puppets & pictures cards). Provide an effective set induction and organise suitable seating arrangement. Use effective communicative skills (intonation & tone). Use clear audible tone and words. Conduct a question & answer session. A teacher evaluates the effectiveness of story telling and provide follow-up activities (discussion, story writing & role play).
Planning and Organization (Objective, story content, teaching aids, conducive classroom situation) Implementation (Set induction, intonation, facial expression, teaching aids, question insertion)

Principles and Guidelines

Stages of Teaching-Learning Activities

Closure

(Questioning, summary, discussion, guide pupils to act and record main points of the story)

Discussion Method
1. Planning Stage: Topic determination based on the learning objectives and students interest. 2. Introduction Stage: Explanation on the discussion aims, group division, chairman and secretary appointed, tables and chairs are arranged. 3. Discussion Stage: Encouragement given by the chairman, members voiced out their opinions, secretary takes notes, guidance given by teacher. 4. Wind-up Stage: Groups are dissolved, secretary presented their discussion, guidance given by teacher. 5. Conclusion Stage: Summarisation by the teacher, comments given and pupils record them.

Brainstorming
Preliminary Stage
Introduce discussion topic/problem Explain the aim of discussion Explain the procedures for discussion Divide pupils into several buzz groups

Discussion Stage
Evaluation and conclusion stage

Chairman leads and directs discussion Group members contribute ideas for possible solutions Secretary takes down ideas suggested

Secretary of each group present the summary in front of the class Teacher guides pupils to make evaluation and conclusion Pupils record consensus opinion

Demonstration
Principle: Before (Planning) (Topic, objective & content determined, equipment & apparatus prepared, place arrangement arranged, precautions taken, teacher informs about the aim & focus of the activity) During (Implementation) (Teacher should face the pupils, repeat demonstration if pupils in doubt, use questioning technique, ensure all pupils give full attention, ask the pupils to repeat the demonstration if time permits) After (Consolidation &Reinforcement) (Discuss about the important parts and aims of the discussion, carry out a consolidation activity)

Problem Solving
Principle: 1. Problem-solving questions are given to pupils after they acquired the relevant knowledge skills. 2. Problems are based on the pupils ability & previous knowledge. 3. Guidance is given by teacher before the process begins. 4. Discussion on various ways to solve the problem with pupils. 5. Teacher avoids the use of demonstration method. The pupils should carry out the process by themselves.
