How to teach patients to use insulin pen?

Instructing Patients to Use Solostar Pen

Apidra Lantus

Step 1 Take off pen cap Check appearance of insulin

Both Lantus and Apidra are clear insulins Do not use if cloudy, colored or with particles

Step 2 Attach the needle

Remove the protective seal from a new needle Line up the needle with the pen; keep it straight as you attach it
If needle not kept straight when attached: damage rubber seal (and cause leakage) or break the needle

Step 3 Perform a safety test

Select a dose of 2 units by turning the dosage selector Take off outer needle cap (keep to remove used needle later) Take off inner needle cap and discard it

Step 3 Perform a safety test.
Hold the pen with the needle pointing upwards Tap the insulin reservoir so any air bubbles rise up toward the needle Press injection button all way in Check if insulin comes out of the needle tip
If no insulin comes out, check for air bubbles and repeat test 2-3 times. If still no insulin comes out, change the needle and try again.

Step 5 Inject the dose

Insert the needle into the skin Press the injection button all the way

If your Solostar is in cool storage, take it out 1-2 h before you inject to allow it to warm up. Cold insulin is more painful to inject.

The number in the dose window returns to 0 as you inject Keep the injection button pressed all the way in; slowly count to ten before you withdraw the needle from the skin

Step 6 Remove and discard needle Put the outer cap needle back on the needle and use it to unscrew the needle from the pen Never replace the inner needle cap to reduce risk of accidental injury

Always put the pen cap back on before storing

Storing pen w/o the needle attached helps prevent

contamination/infection entry of air leakage of insulin inaccurate dosing
