Introduction
CATIA (Computer Aided Three-dimensional Interactive Application) is a multi-platform CAD/CAM/CAE commercial software suite developed by the French company Dassault system. CATIA serves Engineers, Designers, Scientists to dramatically increase their power of innovation. Based on the 3D - Experience platform. CATIA goes far beyond traditional 3D CAD software tools to offer a unique Digital Product Experience.

History
CATIA started as an in-house development in 1977 by French aircraft manufacturer Avions , Marcel Dassault. In 1984, the Boeing Company chose CATIA V3 as its main 3D CAD tool, becoming its largest customer.

In 1990, Gernal Dynamic Electric Boat Corp chose CATIA as its main 3D CAD tool, to design the U.S. Navy's Virgina Class Submarine.

History Cont.
In 1996, it was ported from one to four Unix operating systems, including IBM AIX, Silicon Graphics IRIX and Sun Microsystems SunOX .

In 1998, V5 was released, which was an entirely rewritten version of CATIA, with support for UNIX, Window NT and Window XP . In November 2010, Dassault launched Catia V6R2011x by improving Catia V5 software.

Scope Of Application
CATIA supports multiple stages of product development, technical design, manufacturing, and engineering. CATIA provides a suite of surfacing, reverse engineering, and visualization solutions to create, modify, and validate complex innovative shapes CATIA enables the creation of 3D parts, from 3D sketches, sheet metal and tooling parts up to the definition of mechanical assemblies.

Systems Engineering
CATIA offers a solution to model complex and intelligent products through the systems engineering approach.
CATIA can be customized via API. CATIA V5 & V6 can be adapted using Visual Basic and C++programming languages via CAA

V5 can work with other applications, including Enovia, Smarteam, and various CAE Analysis applications.

Key Features
Strengthens 3D Master representations and maximizes users productivity . Brings stunning productivity to automotive powertrain and chassis designers by Autodraft capability.

3DLive for CATIA brings 3D Functional Tolerancing into the reach of thousands of non-specialists .
Functional modelling supports the design of complex machined parts. Empower end-to-end industry process coverage for composite design to manufacturing.

Industries Cont.
Automotive Many automotive companies use CATIA to varying degrees, including : BMW Porsche Renault Toyota Ford Honda Audi Land Rover koda

CATIA In Shipbuilding
Dassault Systems has begun serving shipbuilders with CATIA V5, GD Electric Boat used CATIA to design the latest fast attack submarine class for the United States Navy. Newport News Shipbuilding also used CATIA to design the Gerald R. Ford class of super carriers for the US Navy. In 2004 Beneteau Group develop new sailing and leisure motor boats .

Advantages
Catia is the only solution capable of addressing the complete product development process. Catia helps companies to speed-up their responses to market needs. CATIA's integrated analysis, simulation, synthesis, and optimization ensure product quality and market acceptance. In the field of car design, CATIA has a specialized application for so-called class CATIA enables customers to set up workbenches that contain all the tools, translators, and pointers to directories that are needed to perform a specific task

Comparision
Specialized Modules. Ease of Use Sophisticated shape modelling. Catia is much better in surfacing than Pro E and solidworks . Generative Surface Design product enables designers to sweep, revolve, and loft surfaces with solid models. CATIA also incorporates specialized design in wiring, sheet metal, and composite materials for aircraft. Free Style Shaper enables designers to create surfaces bounded by curves CATIA also offers shape-modeling capabilities beyond those of SolidWorks

Future scope
Catia facilitates the design of electronic, electrical as well as distributed systems such as fluid .

Catia have scope in designing of jewelry and clothing.
