BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO G.I.S.

A GIS is a computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying geographically referenced information; that is, data identified according to location.

CONSIDER THIS EXAMPLE

Suppose we input the data from various databases of wetland map, contour map, soil data and satellite image of the area. Using maps of wetlands, slopes, streams, land use, and soils, the GIS might produce a new map layer or overlay that ranks the wetlands according to their relative sensitivity to damage from nutrient runoff.

USING DIFFERENT DATA GIS IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING VARIOUS MAPS PORTRAYING VARIED INFO. IN LAYERS.

:Map indicating various land uses in the study area.

:Study Areas soil map stored in GIS database. Numbers indicate the type of soil.

:Map showing the steepness of slopes in the study area, created by GIS from the digital elevation model.

AND USING VARIOUS MAPS PRODUCED IT CAN FURTHER PRODUCE COMBINATIONS OF MORE MAPS IN OVERLAYERS.

Distances to streams as measured by three 200-meter buffers derived from a digital map of hydrography.

The wetlands in the study area ranked according to their vulnerability to pollution on the basis of combination of factors evaluated by GIS.

REAL ESTATE

Location drives the real estate industry. It's not just about finding any site but finding the best site. Real estate companies count on GIS technology to deliver the results they need.

By analyzing data around locations aerial photographs, traffic counts, shopping center usage, merchandise potential data, and competitive influencesthey can find properties to match exacting specifications.

REAL ESTATE

GIS helps the real estate industry to analyze, report, map, and model the merits of one site or location over another. From identifying the best fit for new commercial development or matching a homebuyer's decision criteria to managing a property portfolio, GIS delivers the answers needed to make the best choice in real estate.

THE FOLLOWING ARE THE MAIN SELECTION CRITERIAS:

Physical environment (slope and view, parks and natural reserves, rivers and beaches) Amenity and transport (shops and shopping centers, schools and railway stations) Pollution and noise (main road pollution and noise, railway noise, aero plane noise) Money( loan, income and transport cost) Potential value increase (price trend)

AIRPORT NOISE IMPACTS ON PROPOSED SCHOOLS

JUET SEMINAR

3/12/2014

The Timucuan development of regional impact (DRI), a 10,000acre area in northern Jacksonville, Florida, proposes a mixed land use that encompasses more than 10,000 residential units, 800,000 square feet of commercial and retail space, 200,000 square feet of office space, and 400 hotel rooms. In addition to the standard developmental constraints, noise impacts from both a proposed and existing runway at the Jacksonville International Airport were analyzed to see how it affected schools.

ICAO CASE STUDY

Challenge
To ensure continued safety of Airways and Airport, aviation authority needed to shift from static tabular data to an interactive GIS portal.

Solutions

Implemented GIS portal hosting global data for local ICAO users Developed processes to support coordination between state and international organizations Increased frequency of data updates Improved daily organization of work

SOUND AND SAFETY ANALYSIS AT PHOENIXMESA GATEWAY AIRPORT

Using ArcGIS 3D Analyst in conjunction with Google Earth, FAA regulations regarding allowable building heights can be better displayed for modeling purposes. In addition, with the assistance of ATAC Corporation's tools, aircraft noise can be modeled to show the extent of areas most prone to aircraft over flight for both existing and proposed development.

TRAFFIC ENGINEERING & MASS TRANSIT SYSTEMS

JUET SEMINAR

3/12/2014

Public transit is key to meeting transportation challenges presented by rapidly growing cities, rising fuel prices, budget constraints, and global environmental issues.

Traffic engineering uses engineering techniques to achieve the safe and efficient movement of people and goods such as road geometry, sidewalks and crosswalks, segregated cycle facilities, shared lane marking, traffic signs, road surface markings and traffic lights.

THE USE OF GIS IN RESTRUCTURING SAN DIEGOS TRANSIT SYSTEM

JUET SEMINAR

3/12/2014

From 2004 to 2006, the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) conducted a Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA) to evaluate and restructure its services to more effectively serve the regions transit needs within the constraints of funding limits. The COA resulted in changes to roughly 90 percent of the bus services and is expected to save $9 million in annual operating subsidies through improved operational efficiencies and increased ridership.

LTA uses GIS for reducing road accidents and ensuring public safety. It also uses the GIS technology in LTGDH for capturing borehole information for soil analysis, planning of construction site excavation, foundation design, and tunnel alignment. To date, there is data from more than 8,000 borehole records captured by LTA, all of it stored in LTGDH.
