1. The data of the motion of the car can be presented in the form of a graph called a motion graph.
2. Three types of graph: i) Displacement time graph ii) Velocity time graph

iii)

Acceleration time graph

C 30 time,s

a) The gradient of the graph s- t graph of an object gives the rate of change of displacement which is the velocity of the object.

Example: From the graph a) Velocity,v (o to A) = gradient of graph O to A

= y2 y1 _________ x2 x1 = 20 - 0
____________

50 = 4 ms-1

C 30 Time , s

a) Gradient of the v t graph is the rate of change of the velocity which is the acceleration of the object. b) The area under the graph gives the displacement of the object.

Example: From the graph given,

a) The acceleration, a ( O to A) = gradient of graph O to A

= y2 y1 _________ x2 x1 = 20 - 0 -----------50 = 4 ms

b) Displacement , s of the object = Area under the graph = Area 1 + Area 2 + Area 3 = 50 + 200 + 150 = 400 m

2. Which of the following can be deduced from a velocity-time graph for a truck? velocity

Time A.The truck accelerates uniformly B.The truck first accelerates and then moves with a steady velocity C.The decelerates until it stops.

v (m/s) 30

ANSWER:
Acceleration = gradient of graph a = y2 - y1 / x2 x1 = 30 0 / 3 0 = 10 ms -2
