Many job seekers think that their resume is the only thing to consider when seeking an interview Job seekers must support their resume through the development of a professional brand Here are 4 of the top 8 Essential Steps for Managing your Professional Brand

Step 1:

Sort Out Your Tool Box

Every candidate should have a LinkedIn profile
Analogous to a dynamic resume Details your work history, accomplishments, skills, & education Provides an image to put a face with your professional details

Request LinkedIn recommendations

Let trusted colleagues showcase your abilities

Join career-related groups and pages

Demonstrate your interest & involvement in your industry

Step 1:

Sort Out Your Toolbox

Lock-down personal social media

Increase your Facebook privacy settings Know what content you have on YouTube, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest, etc. Remove, or block from the public, content that is unprofessional

Step 2:

Claim the Name that Suits You

Present a consistent name
Many people are involved in the hiring process A uniform name ensures all info you provide is attributed to you not a candidate with a similar name

For example
If your name on a resume is: Jonathan Smith Your name in your email signature is: Johnny Smith, And your LinkedIn profile says: John Mark Smith You diluted your personal brand

Step 2:

Claim the Name that Suits You

Choose professional usernames & handles If your Twitter handle is LazyDad1966

Implies you are lazy Provides a year & could lead to pre-judgment

Step 3:

Give Your Brand Some Curb Appeal

Craft a professional positioning statement
Introduce yourself Uniquely identify your abilities & interests Allow your personality to shine through

Do not just summarize your work history

Provide insight into who you are Make your brand more personal

Use this statement on your social media profiles

Step 3:

Give Your Brand Some Curb Appeal

Search for your name & pseudonyms online

Ensure the content you find meshes with your image Delete, or block from the public, any unprofessional content

Create Google Alerts for your name and pseudonyms

Regularly monitor your online reputation

Step 4:

First Impressions Are Lasting Impressions

Keep your communication professional
Do not give out shared landline or family phone numbers Ensure your voicemail message is professional and clear

Promptly return phone calls and emails

Morning calls/emails no later than early afternoon Afternoon calls/emails no later than end of business
