Groups Vs teams Group: plurality of individuals (2 -20) who communicate with each other and are aware of some commonality Common goals Work for specific time frame and limited resources

Team is type of group Uses self management techniques to achieve goals to which members show high commitment

Similarity Groups and Teams

They both experience development stages, differentiate in to roles, create norms, establish a culture and have communication structure

Difference Groups and Teams Team consists of smaller number of members with complimentary skills Have common purpose, performance goals and mutually accountable Teams are more cohesive, more responsible and use members more effectively Groups have focused goal while teams have shared leadership Teams have specific purpose while group have purpose identical to organization mission

Teams members are individually and mutual accountable while group are mostly individual accountable Team have collective output , group have individual output Teams indulge in open ended discussion and active problem solving, groups run meetings that are efficient Teams assess direct output while groups measure indirectly by their influence on others

The management of diversity

Initial stagegroup development Cultural differences must be considered and adjustments made such as for those from high context and low context cultures. Focus on professional qualifications, experience and resources that each member can bring to the group. The goal is to capitalize on common level of ability and difference in attitudes/approaches. Task maintenance functions such as mediating differences in working style, thinking processes, and value differences must be a priority.

Develop group processes where broad involvement of all members is supported and multiple perspectives generated and valued. Develop process of reconciling differences to converge to a decision.

Teams discuss, decide and delegate but work collectively, groups discuss, delegate and work individually
