AGMARK is a certification mark employed on agricultural products

in India, assuring that they conform to a set of standards approved by the Directorate of Marketing and Inspection, an agency of the Government of India.

AGMARK: Derived from Agricultural marketing.

The Directorate of Marketing and Inspection enforces the Agricultural

Produce (Grading and Marketing) Act, 1937.

Under this Act Grade standards are prescribed for agricultural and allied commodities. These are known as Agmark' standards
It is a Central Sector Scheme

It Ensures quality and purity.

Definition : Agmark grading means

grading, of an article in accordance with the grade standards prescribed under the provision of the Act

OBJECTIVES
Promotion of Grading and

Standardisation of Agricultural and allied commodities under Agricultural Produce (grading and marking )Act, 1937

Grade designation marks

Grade designation marks shall

consist of Agmark labels of different types, namely, tie-on-labels, paste-on-labels, Banderol labels, etc. Each Agmark label shall carry letters indicating series and serial number.

Salient features
Quality standards for agricultural commodities are

framed based on their intrinsic quality.


Food safety factors are being incorporated in the

standards to compete in World trade.


Standards are being harmonized with

international standards keeping in view the WTO requirements.

Certification of agricultural commodities is

carried out for the benefit of producer/manufacturer and consumer.


Certification of adulteration prone commodities

viz. Butter, Ghee, Vegetable Oils, Ground-Spices, Honey, Wheat Atta etc. is very popular.
Blended Edible Vegetable Oils and Fat Spread are

compulsorily required to be certified under

Agmark.

Facilities for testing and grading of Cotton for the

benefit of cotton growers is provided through six cotton classing centers set up in cotton growing belt in the country.

Check is kept on the quality of certified products

through 23 laboratories and 43 offices spread all

over the country.

ELIGIBILITY
Parties desirous to grade their commodities under Agmark have to obtain Certificate of

Authorization
For the purpose, they Should have adequate

infrastructure to process the commodity and access to an approved laboratory for the determination of quality and safety factors

Procedure to apply
Interested parties have to apply in prescribed

proforma along with prescribed documents to


the nearest office of the Directorate.
Parties have to give details of infrastructure,

processing facilities, details of laboratory etc

for obtaining Certificate of Authorisation.

Grant of Certificate of Authorization


Any person or body of persons desirous of being

authorized to grade and mark an article under the provisions of the Act shall apply to the Agricultural Marketing Adviser or any other officer of the Central or State Government authorized by the Agricultural Marketing Adviser.

An application for authorization shall be accompanied by


Proprietorship declaration or partnership deed or

Memorandum and Articles of Association


Blue print of the premises proposed to be used to grade and

mark the commodity


Ownership declaration on non-judicial stamp paper about the

premises or the consent of the owner of the premises


Consent of approved laboratory, grinding mill etc., wherever

applicable
Prescribed fee

Renewal of Certificate of Authorization

Valid for a period of five years from the date of

issue
Renewed on the basis of grading performance

and on application by subsequent financial years.
