Meaning.

It is a state of tension experienced by individuals facing extraordinary demands, constrains or opportunities.

Job stress -Definition

Nature of job stress


Stress can be either positive or negative.
It is a state of tension. Individuals facing ; extraordinary demands, constrains, or

opportunities. Individuals can react to Stress in; - Emotionally - Behaviorally - Psychologically.

Faces of stress
1 . Constructive stress (Eustress)
Acts in a positive manner. For the individual & Organization. Individual is in balance or within tolerable limits.

Increase effort, stimulate creativity, and encourage diligence.

Eg: Falling in love, winning a contest.

2 . Destructive stress

(Distress)

It is not healthy for individual or organization. Effects are out of balance or outside the tolerance

limits. Excessive stress may lead to breakdown a persons physical and mental systems. It is through errors, absenteeism, turnover, dissatisfaction, reduced performance etc..

Symptoms of job stress


1 . Biological :- Craving for food when under pressure. - Nail baiting. 2. Psychological:- Anger over unimportant issues. - Uncertainty about whom to trust. 3 . Behavioral :-

- A feeling of being failure. - Inability to show true feelings.

1 . Organizational factors

Occupational demands. Role conflict. Role ambiguity. Role overload. Role underload.

Interpersonal role.
Ineffective communication. Job change.

2 . Personal Factors
The impact of life change. Type A and Type B personalities.

The belief in External locus of control.
