THE 60's - A DECADE THAT NEVER DIED

When will the sixties end? It's almost forty years now since the days of flowers and freelove, Beach Boys and the Beatles, but they still continue to obsess every one of us. Today that obsession is greater than ever. We are living in the midst of a huge sixties revival and everywhere you turn you'll find some echo of those dim, distant days. It's in the music, the fashion, the haircuts, the designs, the drugs and the politics.

Music
The Beatles: A British popular music group who made their first record in 1962 and became probably the most famous and successful group ever. The members of the Beatles were: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison. Their songs were translated to many languages and they were famous for their style of singing.

They were enormously popular and had a huge following of young people anxious to change an outdated society. Young people idolized them so much that they imitated their walk, their way of dressing and their actions. When they separated in 1970, each member of the group continued to work in popular music.

Fashion
Mary Quant: She was an English fashion designer, very popular in the 1960's. She achieved a revolution in women's clothing and make-up. Her Chelsea boutique, Bazaar, opened in 1957, but it was in the 60's with the launch of the mini-skirt that her career really took off.

JOHN FITZGERALD KENNEDY

He was the 35th president of the United States (1961-1963), a Democrat and the first Roman Catholic to be elected. He represented hopes for peace and better understanding among all countries. He spent much of his time travelling to see and feel the problems of every country. He was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. His death saddened the whole world.

WOODSTOCK THE GREATEST PEACE AND LOVE FESTIVAL

On August 15, 1969, while the Vietnam war was raging, the largest gathering for peace that the world had ever seen began. Nearly half a million people converged upon upstate New York to listen to rock music and to see such idols as Jimmy Hendrix and Janis Joplin. Even though Woodstock lasted only 3 days it was enough to trigger the biggest upheaval of social values in history.

Young people's attitudes changed and free love and psychedelics, hyped by exHarvard Professor Timothy Leary, became a part of our history. Although the festival lasted only 3 days, the dream lives on.

MODERN POPULAR MUSIC

Modern popular music was a result of a transformation which occurred in 1965. In 1940, popular music was divided in Blues and Folk music. Blues was preferred principally by the American black people, and concentrated on melancholic themes: solitude, suffering, frustration and religion. Famous blues musicians were Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole.

Rock 'n Roll derived from Blues, and was rhythmic and extremely sentimental. Rock 'n Roll also proved to be excellent dance music. Elvis Presley was responsible for the popularity of Rock.

ln 1965, a spontaneous transformation occurred in popular music. ln the USA, the transformation originated in San Francisco. ln England, the transformation was stimulated by The Beatles. The result of all these three movements is Modern Popular Music.
