The Music Video

A Performance and Narrative based music video. The song: The painful art of dreaming The band: The Turning Narrative: A romance about a teenager and the concept of love at first sight, which turns out to just be a dream

The Lyrics:

Why do I have to rely On certain people but they dont suffice? Behind those eyes are pain and lies Beautys a concept that lies behind my own side
To say goodbye is sometimes just right To special people who live their own I want to be with someone who defines The art of dreaming inside my own mind

What Id do to be with you I climb over mountains just for a clue What Id do to be with you The Painful art of dreaming is something that I get too Out of here is something I seek To a better place where love is in reach What was real has turned out all fake Another drink to learn from my mistakes What Id do to be with you I climb over mountains just for a clue What Id do to be with you The Painful art of dreaming is something that I want too So Ill leave, and turn the other page, and promise not stay, and hope it goes away, and comes another day The Painful Art of dreaming is something that I get too.

Performance
Filming the band in a studio We want the performance shoots to over lap the narrative. Using a long fade in; so that the audience can still see the narrative under the shots of the band performing. Studio space: We have a few contacts in place (who have appropriate studio space) that we can potentially use to film the performance. We want a plain studio space, preferably a white backdrop.

Narrative
The narrative for our music video will present the concept of Love at First sight. Casting: We will need a couple. E.g a teenage boy and girl. We want the narrative to show a teenage romance were they go on dates but end up falling out, arguing and breaking up. The end of the narrative we show the audience the painful side of his dream and how love doesnt always work out. Iconography of romance: Flowers, Evening walks, dates, kissing in the rain.

The Story
We will initially have the couple bump into each other on the street. We will then use a smooth cut through the eye were it jumps to them dating (this is where the boy will be dreaming). We will then have different shots of the couple dating and falling in love. Cute moments As the narrative unfolds the couple will begin to argue and fight. The ending of the music video will suggest to the audience the previous clips were his dreams and the reality of the narrative is that they are strangers and dont know each other. We will end the music video by continuing the starting clip, to show that the girl just walks off after the have bumped into each other. (e.g. the real scenario)
His painful dream He imagines their relationship They meet in the street The normality They walk away

The shoot
For the filming of our music video, we will need to do two shoots. One for the narrative; the filming for this will realistically be completed over two days. For the performance sections of our music video we will need to film this section in one day, to allow for the best results when we edit, we need to film various takes of the song using different camera shots and angles so when we have our final edit we will be left with a constant complex music video.

Potential Locations
Performance: W4 studio Empty Field Tunnel Back alley Narrative: Boston Manor Field and River Coffee shop Restaurants in London

Casting
The band: The Turning A 16-20 year old Boy A 16-20 year old Girl We need the Girl and boy to act as a couple and be comfortable around each other. Finding a couple that are already together will be an advantage for our filming as this will allow them to act natural in front of the camera.

Equipment
Digital SLR camera- For filming the music video SLR camera- For taking pictures during the shoots as evidence Memory cards Tri pods (Two minimum) Laptop to upload footage, (to prevent loss of memory) Lights Costumes/ Make-up/ Props

Things we need to organise:

The date we are filming. We need to make sure the band and the cast are free to film on this day and come prepared with the equipment they need to perform there song and act for filming Compose costumes and props for filming Collect all the Equipment we will need Make a shooting schedule for the filming days

Challenging Codes and Conventions

Our chosen song for our music video is a indie, alternative band, who produce a variety of up beat and acoustic songs. Common codes and conventions for an indie music video are:

- Performance
Many indie rock music videos that are created keep to the concept of performance. This is because the band want to be the main focus with the music video. The indie genre itself is never about success but about the music and passion the performers hold.
We are going to challenge this convention by adding in a narrative within the music video. We still want the genre of the music video to be recognised so we have decided by using both performance and narrative we have developed a more interesting style. Also by using a narrative it allows for the audience to engage in the video as the story unfolds.

- Costume
Costume is another convention that allows you to recognise the indie genre. Indie music videos commonly allow for costumes to be laid back and casual. The dominant colour within indie music videos is dark and dull, usually black, greys and maroons this is a representation the songs indie bands sing. Costume isnt a major priority within an indie music video as they don't require fancy changes of elaborate costumes as again the priority is their music.
We will keep this convention the same as challenging the costume wouldnt benefit the music video greatly and it would also make the genre even more unrecognisable.

- Positioning of the band and facial expressions

Typically within the indie genre the lead singer is placed front centre stage. This is due to the audience recognising the lead singer the most. Within indie music videos facial expressions tend to be minimal, keeping them serious and plain. This is so the expressions can link to the emotions of the song and can be associated with the genre.
We will challenge this convention as we want to view the band as one whole and not focus all the attention on the lead singer. We think it is important to challenge this convention as there are 4 members within the bands and not 1. We will also develop the convention of facial expressions by asking the band to look like they are enjoying themselves and enjoying the music. This will also allow for the audience to enjoy the music video.

- Props and Settings

Commonly the only props you will see within an indie music video are the bands instruments. This is because the indie genre dont mess around with extras. The instruments are the most important and nothing else is needed. Settings within a indie music video also tend to be dark or plain locations. Sometimes urban locations. Somewhere which is no where is ideal within an indie music video. This allows for the mise en scene to fit with the emotions and atmosphere of the song
We will develop this convention by using props within the narrative however we will not be using any props other than the bands instruments during the performance shoots. We will also develop the settings convention in the same way by using various different locations for the narrative and having a plain simple location for the performance.

- Editing
Straight cuts are common within the indie genre and are frequently used and repeated. This is so it fits with the face pace of the song and allows for the video to flow. It can also be a representation of the bands life and can suggest they live an ongoing fast moving lifestyle.
We are going to challenge this convention by using fades and soft transitions that match from shot to shot, this is so the music video represents the romance and the love within the narrative. We will also keep to the convention of editing with we cut together the performance sections as we still want the indie genre to be recognised.
