Introduction to the Atom

Warm Up

Consider this picture

What do you see? What level are we looking at the picture.. macro, micro, molecular?

Consider this picture

What do you notice now? What has changed?

Consider this picture

What has changed about what you see in the picture? What level are we looking at it now macro, micro, molecular?

Consider this picture

What do you see? What do you think this is a picture of? What is your evidence?

Consider this picture

What do you think it is now? What is your evidence?

Consider this picture

Now do you know what the picture is of? What is your evidence?

Consider this picture

What do you think you are looking at? What do you see? What level are we looking at this picture on macro, micro, molecular?

Consider this picture

What has changed about what we see? What level is the picture using now macro, micro, molecular?

Consider this picture

What has changed about the picture? Is it still the same thing? How has what we are looking at changed?

The Atom

On the molecular level (very zoomed in), we see the molecules. These molecules are called atoms.

The Atom

An atom is the smallest unit of an element that keeps the properties of that element.

How small is an atom?

A single penny has 2 x 10^22 or

20,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 atoms

Label the atom

All atoms are made of the same 3 subatomic (smaller than an atom) particles.

What is the Periodic Table??

The periodic table is arranged by increasing (from left to right) atomic numbers. The atomic number is the number of protons than one element has. The mass number/atomic mass is how much one atom of a given element weighs. It is the number of protons and neutrons combined!

WATCH THIS

Key Points

Atomic # = the number of protons. Atomic mass= the # of protons and neutrons. The number of protons and electrons are the SAME. Atomic mass Atomic # = neutrons.

Check For Understanding

Give the mass number of the following elements.

Titanium _____ Tin _____ Mercury _____ Oxygen _____ Hydrogen _____

Check For Understanding

Give the atomic number of the following elements.

Helium _____ Nitrogen _____ Radon _____ Beryllium _____ Sulfur _____

So how am I going to use that???

Lets Practice!
Example: Copper Atomic Mass Atomic Number Protons = Electrons = Neutrons =

In your table groups

Activity!

Group 1 will move to the back of the room to answer atom riddles. Group 2 will work on the Independent practice. After 10 minutes we will switch!
