INTRODUCTION Unicef (United
Nations International Childrens Emergency Fund) is one of the specialized agencies of the United Nations. It was established in 1986 by the United Nations General Assembly to deal with rehabilitation of children in war ravaged countries. It 1953, when the emergency functions were over, the General Assembly gave it a new name U.N. Childrens Fund but retained.

DEFINITIONS
CHILD PROTECTION DEFINITIONS OF THE INDICATORS Child labour: Percentage of children aged
15 to14 years of involved in child labour activities at the moment of the survey. A child is considered to be involved in the child labour activities under the following classifications (a) children 5 to 11 years of age that during the week preceding the survey deal at least one hour of economic activity or

at least 28 hours of domestic works, (b) children 12 to 14 years of age that during the week preceding the survey did at least 14 hours of economic activity or at least 42 hours of economic activity and domestic work combined. CHILD LABOUR BACKGROUND VARIABLES: Sex of the child; urban or rural place residence, poorest 20% or richest 20%of the description of the household assess; mothers education, reflecting mothers with and without some level of education. BIRTH REGISTRATION: Percentage of children less than 5 years of age were registered at the moment

of the survey. The numerator of this indicator includes children whose birth certificate was seen by the interviewer or whose mother or caretaker says the birth has been registered.

Overall objectives
1. To reduce HIV transmission. 2. To reduce the impact of the epidemic, on children, young peoples and families, through increasing the effectiveness of national and intercountry responses. 3. To assist the facilitate achievement of objectives formulated for UNICEF country programmes 4. To participate and help to coordinate new regional and country initiative . 5. To reduce trafficking in women and children with HIV\AIDS\STD prevention and care activities.

Content of services
(a) Child health: UNICEF has provided substantial aid for the production of vaccines and sera in many countries. UNICEF has supported India's BCG vaccination programme from its inspection. Its has also associated in erection of a penicillin plant , near Pune ; donated a DDT plant ; two plants for manufacture of triple vaccine and iodized salt. UNICEF has also assisted environment sanitation programmes emphasizing safe and sufficient water for drinking and household use in rural areas. The purpose is not only to reduce child illness and death, but to improve the quality of life in the villages. (b) Child nutrition: UNICEF gives high priority to improving child nutrition. Its aid for child nutrition , which first took the form of supplementing child feeding began to expand in mid-1950s with the development of low-cost protein-rich food mixtures .

(c) Family and child welfare: The purpose is to


improve the care of children , both within and outside their homes through such means a parent education , day care centres , child welfare and youth
agencies and womens clubs. These service are carried out not as separate projects but as part of health , nutrition and education or home economic extension programmes. (d) Education- formal and non-formal : In collaboration with UNESCO ,UNICEF us assisting India in the expansion and improvement of teaching science in India . Science laboratories equipment , workshop tools , library books , audiovisual aids are being made available to educational institutions.

Currently , UNICEF is promoting a campaign known as GOBI campaign to encourage 4 strategies for a child health revolution

-G for growth charts to better monitor child development -O for oral rehydration to treat all mild and moderate dehydration -B for breast feeding , and -I for immunization against measles, diphtheria , polio, pertussis , tetanus and tuberculosis.

Since 1976 , UNICEF has been participating in Urban Basic Services (UBS) . The aim of the UBS projects is to upgrade basic services (e.g. , health , nutrition , water supply , sanitation and education ) especially for children and women - in selected cities and towns. The overall objectives is to improve the degree and quality survival and development of the children of the urban low income families.

As full partners in primary health care , UNICEF and WHO have been developing joint strategies in support of its implementation at country level.

UNICEF will Support Action


(a) Prevent new infections among young people. (b) Prevent parent to child transmission of the HIV virus. (c) Expand access to care and support for children and their families living with HIV and AIDS (d) Expand care, protection and support for children, UNICEF will intensity its advocacy and programming.

CONCLUSION
In 1990, this new potential for specific forces means it is now possible to achieve on the greatest goals for humanity could ever set for itself

the goal of adequate food , clean water , safe sanitation , primary health care , family planning ,and basic education for virtually every man , women and child on each. Potential for specific action against these worst aspect of poverty was formulated into a set of basic social goals which accurately reflect that potential and which have been formally accepted by the great majority of the worlds political leaders. A start have been made , in many nations , towards keeping the promise of those goals.
