WHAT EXACTLY IS FACE RECOGNITION

A face recognition system is a computer application for automatically identifying or verifying a person from a digital image or a video frame from a video source.

BIOMETRICS

A biometric is a unique, measurable characteristic of a human being that can be used to automatically recognize an individual or verify an individuals identity. Biometrics can measure both physiological and behavioural characteristics. Biometric system for identification and verification of individuals is the need of the hour.

TYPES OF BIOMETRICS

Physiological biometrics include: a. Finger-scan b. Facial Recognition c. Iris-scan d. Retina-scan e. Hand-scan Behavioural biometrics include: a. Voice-scan b. Keystroke-scan

TWO MAIN USES

1) IDENTFICATION -figure out Who is X? -accomplished by system performing a one-to-many search 2) VERIFICATION -answer the question Is this X? -accomplished by the system performing a one-toone search

WHY CHOOSE FACE RECOGNITION

Its the only biometric which can perform a passive identification in one to many environment, i.e. does not requires individuals active involvement during search. For example :- Identifying a terrorist on an airport.

FIVE STEP PROCESS

1)

2)
3)

Acquiring the image of an individuals face either from a digital image or from a video source. Detecting human faces in the acquired image. Analysis of the image and its comparison with face prints in the system database.

4)

5)

Match or no match. Finally the human operator to verify the result.

ALGORITHMS IMPLEMENTED
The popular traditional algorithms implemented are 1. Principal components analysis (Eigenfaces). 2. Linear discriminate analysis. 3. Elastic bunch graph matching.

Some newly emerging algorithms have achieved great accuracies which was previously unseen. Three Dimension face recognition.
-not affected by changes in lighting like other techniques and can also identify a face from a range of viewing angles.

Skin

texture analysis. -uses the visual details of the skin like unique lines, patterns, and spots apparent in a persons skin to verify his identity.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES
Advantages
Less intrusive

Disadvantages
Breach of privacy

Major security boost Comparatively less accurate Fast Expensive to implement Simple Recognition

FUTURE

ADVANCES

Presently this technology is used by various countries as a law enforcement measure, like visa processing. A lot of research work is going on to improve accuracy and robustness of this technology. In our country it can be implemented as a measure to ensure the identity of a person along with the UID (Unique identification card) which is soon going to be a reality. The day is not far when a persons face will be his private secure and convenient password.
